Ferry sailings cancelled due to lifeboat issues

Wed Apr 12 11:48:42 CEST 2017 Timsen

Several hundred passengers have had their sailings reshuffled or money refunded after Interislander cancelled six sailings of the "Kaiarahi" and was holding the ship in Wellintgon due to a lifeboat fault. Three return sailings of the Kaiarahi have been cancelled to allow for mechanical repairs to be carried out to lifeboats after the fault was found during routine maintenance on Apr 11, 2017. Customers were being rescheduled to other sailings where possible, or offered full refunds if they did not want an alternative sailing. According to Interislander's timetable, the ferry's next sailing would leave Picton on Apr 12 at 10.15 p.m. The safety authority kept contact with Interislander while repairs were made. Maritime NZ fully supported the company's decision to stop operating the vessel until the problem has been fixed. Incoming bad weather might further affect ferry services. The tropical cyclone Cook is set to hit the Cook Strait, with severe winds expected and potential disruptions to sailings. The storm would probably hit late on April 13 afternoon, and conditions would be severe for six to 10 hours.

Kaiahari back to over 75 percent

Wed Nov 16 12:26:24 CET 2016 Timsen

The "Kaitaki" and "Kaiarahi" were back to over 75% capacity on Nov 15 on the on Cook Strait, and it was hoped to be running full operations by the end of the week. Real progress has been made over the past 48 hours with getting rail and ferry operations back to full speed and supporting customers in challenging times. All freight lines in the North Island and south of Christchurch are open and operating and rail alternatives have been arranged for CentrePort customers to other North Island ports, meaning there was no disruption for New Zealand’s exports.

Ferry passengers disembarked in Picton after earthquake

Mon Nov 14 11:59:26 CET 2016 Timsen

Passengers disembarked from the "Kaiarahi" after she berthed in Picton on Nov 13, 2016, following earthquake damage at Picton and Wellington ports. Port authorities have now cleared one berth for use though the terminal has sustained damage and remains closed. The "Kaitaki" and "Aratere" remained anchored in Wellington harbour. It was hoped the" Kaitaki" would resume operations on Nov 14, however weather warnings have been issued and may impact this. Both rail spans were still awaiting clearance.
