Owner of grounded vessel to be fined

The Transport Authority has decided to fine Rf700,000 per day the "Emreald Reefer" which ran aground near the Shangri-La Villingili Island Resort in November 2011 after the owners failed to salvage the vessel. After the 25-day period given by the authority to salvage the "Emerald Reefer" expired, the decision made by the authority's committee, which consists of technical officials from the authority, armed forces and Environment Ministry, however has not been finalised. The committee decided to fine the vessel but they have to seek legal advice on the matter. They have not yet informed the owner who has not responded to the repeated requests of the authority to salvage the vessel. The authority on Dec 10, 2011, received a letter from the vessel's Maldivian agent claiming that the owner is not trying to salvage the vessel.
