Search for missing passengers wrapped up
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has wrapped up its search and retrieval operations for missing passengers of the 'Lady Mary Joy 3', saying all have been accounted for. The remains of the last missing passenger were recovered on April 11 in the waters off Barangay Sulutan Matangal in Hadji Mohammad Adjul town. Pfc. Marion Malda, who is among the 25 Army soldiers on the ferry, was the remaining missing passenger. The death toll in the fire was 33 while 216 survived. On April 12 the Basilan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said two more ferry passengers remained missing. PCG personnel were on standby and coordinating with the Basilan PDRRMO for any new development.
33 dead confirmed, two more missing
A body part found floating off Basilan on April 9 belongs to a soldier who was reported missing when the 'Lady Mary Joy 3' caught fire on March 29. The lower extremity was identified to be that of Pfc. Marion Malda. The identity of the victim has been confirmed through secondary identification by his brother through the denim jeans on the body part. The identification brought the number of confirmed fatalities due to the ferry fire to 33. Two other passengers still remained missing.
Death toll now at 32
The death toll from the fire aboard the 'Lady Mary Joy 3'rose to 32 with the discovery of a floating cadaver in Basilan province on Easter in the morning of April 9. The fatality, identified as Alses Hassan, was sighted by a concerned citizen floating in the waters of Langgas Island in Maluso, Basilan. Hassan was one of two missing passengers. Coast Guard personnel turned over the body of Hassan to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office Maluso for proper disposition.The Coast Guard was continuing search operations for the last missing passenger of the ferry.
