Two spans and one support of damaged bridge to be dismantled

Tue Feb 27 12:16:59 CET 2024 Timsen

Two spans and one support of the Lixinsha Bridge in Guangzhou's Nansha district will have to be dismantled, local officials said in a statement on Feb 26, after having been damaged by the 'Liang Hui 688'. The district housing and urban-rural development bureau will then monitor the body of the bridge and provide expert opinions to accelerate repair work. Construction of a makeshift automobile bridge was approved by experts over the weekend, with materials and machinery already sent to the site. The makeshift bridge, scheduled to be completed in seven to 10 days, will connect Sanmin Island to the town of Minzhong in the neighboring city of Zhongshan. The collapse of the bridge also destroyed a water supply pipeline, causing a temporary water supply shortage. The island is home to 9,100 people. After more than 40 hours of repair work, water supply has now returned to normal. The travel needs of island residents have basically been met after two temporary ferry docks started operation over the weekend, increasing the frequency of ferry services. The district commerce bureau has established a special task force to transport daily necessities such as rice, meat, eggs, edible oil and noodles to the island. Special shuttle buses running to and from the ferry docks were transporting students to primary and middle schools off the island. The only primary school on the island has resumed lessons on Feb 26. Postal workers from the Nansha district post office were boarding ferries on motorbikes to deliver daily newspapers and packages to island residents. Some farmers who were growing fruits and vegetables were still affected by the accident, as no vehicles could now reach the island to pick up fruits and other agricultural products. Five dead after bridge collapse due to allision

Fri Feb 23 09:30:29 CET 2024 Timsen

On Feb 22, 2024, five people were killed after the 'Liang Hui 688' allided with a bridge over the Hongqili Waterway in the Pearl River Delta near Guangzhou city, causing part of the bridge to break off, plunging vehicles into the water. The vessel was en route from Foshan city to a southern district of Guangzhou when it crashed into the bridge at 5:30 a.m. (9.30 p.m. GMT). The ship first hit the 18th pylon of the Lixinsha Bridge in Nansha District, then hit the bow against the 19th pylon, resulting in a crack in a crucial part of the bridge. It was lodged between two columns of the Lixinsha Bridge with part of the bridge's two-lane road deck missing. All road traffic on the bridge was halted. Four vehicles and an electric motorbike fell off the bridge. Two vehicles, which included a bus, plunged into the water and three other vehicles ended up on the barge. The bus was carrying only its driver. The administration has set up a special task force to investigate the incident, collect evidence and cooperate with the police to identify those responsible for the accident. The captain of the vessel had been detained. The two injured were in a stable condition and treated in a local hospital. Rescuers recovered the two vehicles that had fallen into the river, and three of the victims were retrieved from one of the vehicles. The other deceased was the motorbike rider. A total of 122 rescuers and 15 vessels, plus advanced rescue equipment, including marine robots and underwater sonar equipment, have been sent to the scene to assist. The China Southern Airlines sent two helicopters to help transport the injured. The Guangzhou Bureau of Transport would be carrying out on-site inspections on the bridge. Human error was thought to have caused the accident. The severely tilted No. 19 pylon and other structures at risk of instability will have to be demolished to eliminate any possible danger. To serve the approximately 9,100 people residing on an island connected by the bridge, boats and buses have been arranged to facilitate transportation. In addition, water and food were being provided, and work was being done to repair the water pipe damaged by the crash.
