Medevac in the Firth of Forth

Mon Nov 05 10:51:48 CET 2012 Timsen

A Kinghorn RNLI Lifeboat crew was involved in the rescue of an injured merchant seaman from the "Coral Meandra" in the Firth of Forth on Oct 4, 2012, in the morning. A call for assistance was made to Aberdeen Coastguard around 8.40 a.m. by the crew of the tanker after an engineer seriously injured a finger in the engine room. The volunteer crew of Kinghorn Lifeboat was requested to recover the man to get him to hospital as soon as possible. The tanker was anchored approximately two miles east of Kirkcaldy when the incident happened. The lifeboat crew were alerted at 09.02 a.m., and were alongside the tanker around 12 minutes later. The tanker had initially requested a helicopter to evacuate the sailor as he was unable to climb down a ladder to a boat; however, the helicopter was going to be approximately 45 minutes, and the crew of the tanker was concerned about the casualty’s condition so Aberdeen Coastguard requested assistance from Kinghorn Lifeboat which arrived at the vessel around eight minutes after launch, and the tanker used its own lifeboat to lower the casualty to water level. The RNLI-crew then transferred the injured man to the lifeboat before returning to Kinghorn where an ambulance was waiting. The casualty was then taken to hospital for treatment.
