Four workers died and another suffered critical burns in an explosion on Jan 17 aboard the "Pranam" ex "Jag Pranam" at a ship-breaking yard in Sitakunda during scrapping works. The cause of the explosion at Mak Corporation Ship-Breaking Yard was not known immediately. The explosion occurred while dismantling a fuel tank. Firefighters brought the fire under control by the evening. The explosion was so huge that it could be heard from two miles away. Possibly night guards lit a fire to escape from the cold that caused the fire. Three workers were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital with severe burns around 2:00 p.m. and two of them died. One man with 100 percent burns died at 2:30 p.m., while the other worker died 15 minutes later with 50 percent burns. The bodies of two over were recovered after the firefighters left the scene. The injured worker is undergoing treatment with 50 percent burns. Another victim with minor injury was released after giving first aid.
