Container ship and convoy escaped attack
On Nov 20, 2016, the "Maersk Cotonou" escaped an attack from eight armed pirates off the coast of Nigeria. Earlier that day, a convoy of supply ships had been attacked in the same area. The "Maersk Cotonou" was, according to security firm Ashy, approached by eight armed men in a speedboat. The ship escaped after carrying out security measures to resist the attack. She could then continue its voyage to Port Harcourt. The vessel was enroute from Onne to Walvis Bay ,ETA Nov 28. The attack was carried out by the same group of pirates who had tried to attack an incoming convoy earlier on Nov 20. A security vessel escorting the convoy chased the boat and came under fire. The vessel returned fire and the attack was aborted.
