Tankers burning in fourth week

Tue Feb 12 12:09:07 CET 2019 Timsen

The fourth week has gone since the onset of a fire on the "Maestro" and "Candy" loaded with liquefied gas in the Black Sea. The Russian tug "Mercury" periodically cools the anchored ships. It was difficult to predict when the burning will stop which may take another week or two. One tanker has drifted into the territorial waters of Russia, the second was located nearby in neutral waters. The 12 rescued crew members were discharged from the city hospital on Jan 25, the next day they left the Crimea. The "Candy", the former "Venice" and the "Maestro" in November 2018 were mentioned in the US Treasury information warning of the risk of US sanctions. Washington claimed that since 2016, ships have been supplying fuel to Syria.

Fire won't be put out soon

Mon Jan 28 11:20:00 CET 2019 Timsen

The fire onboard the "Maestro" and "Candy" which has been ongoing for nearly a week won’t be extinguished soon, the Krasnodar Region’s emergency services said on Jan 28. Out of 32 sailors, only 12 have been rescued, all of them are the citizens of Turkey and India. There were nearly 4,500 tonnes of fuel onboard the two tankers. The fire cannot be put out as gas was still burning. There was still a threat of an explosion. Report with photo: http://tass.com/emergencies/1042045

Maestro anchored, Candy towed out to sea

Fri Jan 25 09:40:42 CET 2019 Timsen

On Jan 24 salvors managed to anchor the "Maestro", so both ships were timewise stationary in Crimean waters inside the 12-miles zone. The "Candy" then broke off her remaining moorings and resumed drifting towards the Crimean coast, still engulfed in flames. The fire on board was much more intense than that on the "Maestro" because she had the bulk of the LPG cargo still in her tanks which was to be transferred onto the alongsie tanker, when the explosion occurred. The SAR tug "Spasatel Demidov" managed to take the "Candy" in tow and pull her further off towards the Black Sea outside the 12-miles-zone.
