Probe into oil spill launched

A probe has been launched into the oil spill caused by the 'Mare Doricum' by Peruvian prosecutors. The fines could reach up to $33 million for the environmental damage if the guilty party was identified. There has been significant environmental contamination, causing death of birds and ocean microorganisms. Peru's environmental authority has been forced to cordon off two beaches and a National Natural Reserve. Cleaning efforts are on a war footing. The Environmental Minister has given two days to the La Pampilla refinery to identify critical points and clear the oil within 10 days. Meanwhile, fingers are being pointed all around as to who is responsible for the mishap. The parent company of the refinery; Repsol and the owner of the oil terminal where the cargo was being unloaded; Petrobras have issued no statement. The navy is primarily being criticized for failing to issue a Tsunami warning, endangering the lives of fishermen, and potentially being responsible for the mishap.

Abnormal waves caused oil spill

On Jan. 15, 2022, an oil spill occurred during the unloading process of the "Mare Doricum" at the La Pampilla refinery in the Callao Province. It was caused by the abnormal waves recorded after the volcanic eruption in Tonga which triggered tsunami waves around the Pacific. The tanker had arrived from Sao Sebastiao on Jan 14. On Jan 16 personnel from the ship and the Multibuoys terminal placed containment barriers of approximately 500 meters length. Three boats were cleaning and collecting the hydrocarbon in the affected area. The Environment Ministry reported that the company that caused the spill could be fined about 34.5 million dollars. The prosecution opened an investigation for the alleged crime of environmental pollution against the La Pampilla Refinery. The tanker was banned from sailing and anchored in the bay of the port of Callao until the investigations have been completed.
