Passenger medevaced in Kalamata

Sun Oct 10 20:08:59 CEST 2021 Timsen

In the afternoon of Oct 9, 2021, the Port Authority of Kalamata was informed by the JRCC that a passenger of the 'Marella Disvoverer' needed to be medevaced 8.6 nautical miles south of the islet of Schiza. The ship headed to the anchorage of Kalamata, and a patrol boat picked up the 80-year-old patient and transported him to the port of Kalamata, while then he was transported by ambulance to the General Hospital of Messinia for further medical examination.

Indian crew members dropped off

Thu Apr 23 13:35:34 CEST 2020 Timsen

A total of 146 Indian crew members of the 'Marella Discovery' which anchored off the Mumbai Port were taken ashore on April 23 after spending 37 days on board. The will be subject to a test for Covid-19 and remain quarantined in a building within the port trust premises until their reports are received. On April 21 the crew had appealed to the Centre to announce a policy for the seafarers on an urgent basis. The cruise was to travel to Cochin, New Mengaluru, Goa and Mumbai between April 2 and 6. However, owing to the coronavirus outbreak and ensuing lockdown, the passengers were disembarked at Laem Chabang in Thailand on March 14. After the ship arrived at Cochin on April 12, it was denied permission to disembark and reached Mumbai on April 14. Since then, the crew was waiting for permission though they stated that none of the crew members onboard has been infected. After dropping off the Indian crew members, the ship will set sail to Norway.

Cruise ship sailing at redued speed after burning in transformer housing

Fri Jan 17 12:17:49 CET 2020 Timsen

For the past five weeks the 'Marella Discovery' has been sailing in south east Asia with half her propulsion out of action after the had ship suffered a localised burning within the transformer housing and was still awaiting repairs. The maximum speed has been cut from 24 knots to 16 knots so the ship cannot sail fast enough to reach all her planned ports of call in the Far East. Passengers booked in January have been told they will miss calls at the island of Koh Samui and the city of Malacca. They will also be spending an additional 31 hours longer at sea. Those leaving the ship at Langkawi were originally planning to be on the Malaysian holiday island from 8 a.m. to 10.40 p.m. They will now arrive at 6 p.m., shortly before sunset, and fly out at 4.15 a.m. TUI was refunding each passenger £250 regardless of the amount paid for the holiday. The company insisted that changed itinerary does not count as significant. If it had done, then the Package Travel Regulations would allow passengers to cancel for a full refund. TUI was now filling empty cabins by selling the cruises at almost half price. A trip on Jan 17 from Manchester, previously priced at £2,370, has been offered at £1,341. Abta, the travel association, also did not consider the changes to the itinerary of the cruise as significant and there has been no breach of its code of conduct. TUI was informing its affected customers and offering compensation, which was in line with what Abta would ask its members to do. If customers maintain there has indeed been significant changes in their individual case or that the compensation offered is not enough they are entitled to pursue this. Customers are advised to travel under protest if their trip is departing soon and to pursue it with Tui on their return. They are also advised to make Tui aware of this decision pre travel.” Some passengers were asking their credit card firms to refund the cost of the cruise on the grounds of breach of contract. The £250 compensation figure was decided by the travel firm’s board of directors. For passengers booked to travel in February, the compensation has been cut to £100 per person because by then TUI hoped to reinstate the call at Koh Samui.
