Sheerleg to raise sunken launch
The sheerleg "Achilles" on Nov 30 was underway to the sinking site of the "WSP 5" being pushed by the "Speyer" and towed by the "Maxau" and was expected on scene in the evening of Nov 30. Since Nov 29 the dredger "Zander" secured the sunken launch. The salvage was planned for Dec 1. The tankbarge meanwhile continued its voyage to Strasbourg. Police launch sunk in collision on the Rhine
In the evening of Nov 29, 2011, the Karlsruhe police boat "WSP No. 5" collided with the 110 meter long, 1808 dwt tank barge "Chemgas 22" being pushed by the "Hekla" in low visibility on the Rhine River near Rappenwört. The hull of the police boat was severely damaged and it suffered water ingress. The crew of three was rescued by the "Hekla" which was pushing the barge. The disabled and sinking police boat was towed astern of the tug to shallower water where it sank up to the main deck. Pollution was reported as some diesel fuel was released from the police boat. A crane was called from Speyer to salvage the vessel.
