Search for missing yacht skipper suspended

The Coast Guard suspended their search efforts on July 16, 2021, for a missing Carlsbad boat fire victim at approximately 8 a.m. Missing is the owner and resident of the 'Relentless', a 50-foot boat that caught fire and sank in the morning of July 15. The U.S. Coast Guard and local partner agency crews searched over the course of 21 hours, covering more than 600 square miles. Coast Guard watchstanders had dispatched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and diverted the Coast Guard Cutters 'Munro', 'Benjamin Bottoms' and 'Haddock'. The Coast Guard cutters arrived on scene and worked together to extinguish the boat fire while the Jayhawk helicopter crew searched for survivors. The boat sustained significant damage and eventually sank in approximately 1,800 feet of water. The 'Haddock' remained on scene throughout the night and a Coast Guard Sector San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew conducted a first-light search in the morning of July 16 for approximately an hour. CGC decommissioned

The US Coast Guard Cutter 'Douglas Munro (WHEC 724)' was decommissioned during a ceremony on april 24, 2021, at the Coast Guard Base Kodiak and presided over by Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Karl Schultz. The 'Douglas Munro' was the Coast Guard’s last remaining 378-foot Hamilton-class high endurance cutter. The fleet of high endurance cutters is being replaced by 418-foot Legend-class national security cutters, which serve as the Coast Guard’s primary long-range asset. Commissioned in 1971, the 'Douglas Munro' was the tenth of twelve high endurance cutters built for long-range, high-endurance missions, including maritime security roles, drug interdiction, illegal migrant interception and fisheries patrols.
