Oil being siphoned from sunken cargo ship

Thu Jan 03 22:42:26 CET 2013 Timsen

The Coast Guard has started collecting fuel from the "Ocean Legacy" at Ormoc City, Leyte. At least 1,400 liters of oil mixed with water were drained from the ship. Traces of fuel were seen coming out of the air vent section. Workers had started removing the container vans aboard the ship to make it easier to refloat the wreck.

Oil leak contaned

Mon Dec 31 16:48:48 CET 2012 Timsen

The Philippine Coast Guard has stopped an oil leak from the "Ocean Legacy" in the port of Leyte on Dec 31. The commander of the Ormoc Coast Guard station ordered the placing of an oil boom around the "Ocean Legacy" to prevent fuel from the vessel from contaminating Ormoc Bay. The ship of the Oceanic Container Lines had listed past 7 a.m. on Dec. 29, about 30 minutes after it docked at the Ormoc port with about 110 container vans on board. The 29-member crew hwas saved. The cleanup operations also involved removing debris from the ship. The fuel that had leaked from the vessel came from its air vent. The Coast Guard, however, was still checking for other possible sources of leak of fuel from the vessel. Divers recovered at least 800 liters of fuel since the cleanup operation started. On Jan 1, 2013, all the fuel that had leaked from the vessel was expected to have been recovered. The "Ocean Legacy" could have carried at least 28,000 liters of bunker fuel when it left the port of Manila and could still be carrying at least 20,000 liters when it docked at the Ormoc City port.
