Engine breakdown and funnel fire
En route from Rotterdam to Tilbury, the 'Norstream’' caught fire on the night of June 23, 2026. Due to a breakdown, only one engine remained operational after a turbo charger failure and a funnel fire broke out. No injuries were reported. The ferry had departed from Europoort Rotterdam on June 23, at 8.30 p.m. for the nine-hour crossing to Tilbury (London Thames). The ship remained the anchorage zone ten nautical miles north of Margate until June 25 at around 5 a.m., waiting for tug assistance. It finally arrived at around 10.30 a.m. The ‘Norstream’ resumed service after repaurd on June 26 and left the pirt back to Rotterdam with an ETA as of June 27. The ship was chartered by P&O Ferries from the Finnish shipping company Bore, part of the Dutch group Spliethoff.
People trapped in container were from Afghanistan
The 35 people found trapped inside a container aboard the "Norstream" were from Afghanistan. One man was pronounced dead at the scene at the Port of Tilbury on the Thames River. Of the survivors, four remained hospitalized on Aug 17. The Border Force intended to speak to them via interpreters so they can piece together what happened and how they came to be in the container. Police believed they are members of the Sikh faith. Among those trapped were 13 children 12 years old or younger. The man who died was believed to be in his 40s. All of the containers on board the ship were searched and no other people were found.
Decontamination zone set up after immigrants were found
35 Indian-origin survivors, presumed to be illegal immigrants, were rescued from a container aboard the "Norstream" after workers on the dock heard screaming and banging from inside the container Several people from the Indian sub-continent, including at least seven children, were hospitalised at Tilbury in Essex. All of the 34 survivors were being treated for dehydration and hypothermia. They were believed to be of Indian-origin, possibly from Punjab region. They were inside the container for at least 12 hours. The "Norstream" left the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium at 10 p.m. on Aug 15 and arrived at Tilbury on Aug 16 at 6 a.m. The stowaways were found inside one of the 64 40-ft-containers, which were almost airtight when sealed. A decontamination zone was set up around the area where the immigrants were found.
