Medevac off Cold Bay

Wed Feb 27 09:10:23 CET 2019 Timsen

A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew, forward deployed with the Coast Guard Cutter "Midgett", medevaced a crew member from the "Ocean Peace" approximately 115 miles north of Cold Bay on Feb 26, 2019. Coast Guard 17th District Command Center watchstanders in Juneau received notification from Discovery Health Force Partners in the morning that a 24-year-old male crewmember was displaying symptoms of appendicitis. Watchstanders briefed the duty flight surgeon and requested that Ocean Peace make way toward Cold Bay. The helicopter crew was still in Cold Bay after transferring a patient Monday. The crew launched from Cold Bay and landed aboard the "Midgett" to refuel. The aircrew then flew to the fishing vessel and hoisted the patient, then landed back aboard the cutter to refuel again before transporting him to Cold Bay. He was placed in the care of an aircrew contracted by Discovery Health for transport to Anchorage. On-scene conditions at the time of the hoist included six-foot seas and 12-mph winds.

Medevac off Cold Bay

Wed Jan 24 12:18:08 CET 2018 Timsen

A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew forward deployed to Cold Bay medevaced two men in the afternoon of Jan 22, 2018, from the fishing vessels "Ocean Peace" and "Northern Patriot" 135 miles north of Cold Bay. Watchstanders at the 17th Coast Guard District command center received separate medevac requests from the vessels. A 21-year-old man aboard the "Ocean Peace" was reported to be suffering from sea sickness and loss of consciousness. The 37-year-old man aboard the "Northern Patriot" was reported to have suffered a hip injury. The watchstanders notified a Coast Guard flight surgeon who recommended the launch of the Jayhawk helicopter crew deployed to Cold Bay to medevac the men. The Jayhawk helicopter crew hoisted the 21-year-old man aboard the "Ocean Peace" at approximately 5 p.m. and the 37-year-old man from the "Northern Patriot" at around 6:30 p.m. Both men were safely transported to Cold Bay Airport where they were transferred to commercial medical services. Weather at the scene of the medevac consisted of 30-to-40-mph winds and 14-to-18-foot seas and 10 miles visibility.
