Drug smugglers seized off Canaries

On June 1, 2021, the 'Odyssey 227', enroute from Campamento to Dakar, was seized with 15 tons of hashish 30 nautical miles East of Fuerteventura in an operation started in Galicia. Members of the Tax Agency, Civil Guard and National Police have boarded the fishing boat in international waters. The action was carried out within the framework of the Agua Mojada operation. The four crew members of the ship have been arrested. The fishing vessel, which was the subject of an investigation carried out by the Office of Maritime Investigation of Customs Surveillance in Galicia, National Police and Civil Guard, was approached after requesting it to the consular authorities of Mongolia in accordance with the United Nations Vienna Convention against illicit drug trafficking, which could be done without encountering resistance from the crew of the vessel. However, the poor state of the sea and the very nature of the operation created a situation of extreme difficulty, so that during the assault the commander of the patrol boat 'Sacre fell' into the water, but was immediately recovered and could continue with the mission. The captain of the 'Odyssey 227' was of Italian nationality, while the chief engineer and the remaining crew were of Senegalese nationality. All of them, along with the shipand the seized drugs, have been escorted to the port of Las Palmas, where they arrived at 5 p.m. The operation was the result of an investigation coordinated by the CITCO (Intelligence Center against Terrorism and Organized Crime), which led to the exploitation phase when the Maritime Intelligence Office for Customs Surveillance of the Tax Agency in the Canary Islands corroborated the hypothesis in relation to a suspicious navigation of the 'Odyssey 227' in waters near the Canary Islands.
