Sinking of Haidar continues to effect the region two years later

Two years after the sinking of the Haidar" in Bararana with 5000 cattle and 700 tons bunker fuel on board on the Pará River, the situation has remained unchanged on the second anniversary of the disaster. The tragedy has hit the lives of thousands of people in the region who claim they have not been compensated to date. The "Haidar" was remaining on the bottom of the Pará River. The bathing in the waters was forbidden. Fishermen continued to feel the impacts of the shipwreck to this day. People are afraid to buy fish from fishermen, thinking the fish may be contaminated. The social and environmental damages caused by the sinking were estimated to be R $ 71 million at least. Around 1,500 families should be compensated only in Vila do Conde. The quay where the ship sank was still banned with the wreck blocking valuable quay space. Raising the ship was estimated to cost R $ 60 million.

3000 drowned cattle still inside capsized ship - carcasses drifted onto beaches

Ranchers from Pará are stuck with 51,000 live cattleready for export to Venezuela and Lebanon which can not transported because the Vila do Conde port in Barcarena, northeast of Pará, is still restricted. The shipment of cattle has been suspended since the sinking of the "Haidar" on Oct 7, which was loaded with 5,000 cattle for slaughter in Venezuela. The ship was also carrying nearly 700 tons of diesel oil. 51 days after the accident, about 3,000 dead cattle were remaining trapped in the cargo holds of the vessel. Only the removal of oil leaked from the ship has meanwhile started. Mammoet Salvage was hired with the salvage which may take four months. Mid October, several hundred carcasses had escaped from the containment and drifted onto tourist beaches. Thousands of cattle decomposing

The rotting bodies of the shipwrecked cattle lie on one of the beaches in the Barcarena region, in Para State, after the "Haidar" capsized in Vila do Conde. The ship had on board 4,900 live cows. The animals, which belonged to the Brazilian beef company Minerva Foods, whhich were headed to Venezuela. The vast majority of around 4,400 animals drowned inside the ship. Of the approximately 500 animals that managed to escape from the wreck, only 100 survived. Hundreds of carcasses were carried by the currents to local beaches. Local families loaded some onto trucks to take home and use for meat, but the remainder rotted in endless rows of bodies on the sand. Local authorities have already removed the carcasses from the beaches but do not seem to know how to remove more than 4,000 bodies rotting below the river's surface. The ship was also carrying nearly 2 million gallons of fuel, which must be removed first.
