Tug boarded by robbers

Fri Aug 16 12:11:50 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Permata 1" (128 gt, built 2003), en route from Sarawak to Port Klang, being underway in the Malacca Strait 4,3 miles south of Tanjung Piai, Johor, was boarded by an unknown number of perpetrators from a small boat on Aug 12, 2019, at 8.50 p.m. The tug was towing a barge. The perpetrators stole some scrap metal and ropes from the barge before escaping. The master of the "Permata 1" raised alarm and reported the incident to the Singapore authorities via VHF.

Singapore warship chases away pirates in Singapore Strait

Wed Sep 02 09:45:34 CEST 2015 arnekiel

Pirates who had boarded a tugboat in the Singapore Strait fled after a warship from the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) closed in, reports said. The Malaysian-flagged Permata 1 was subsequently escorted safely to Singapore waters by a patrol vessel of the RSN. None of the crew onboard were harmed, local media reported. In the morning of Tuesday, Singapore’s Port Operations Control Centre received a signal from the tugboat that pirates were boarding it. The RSN’s Maritime Security Task Force (MSTF) immediately deployed the warship RSS Resilience and the pirates fled towards Indonesian waters on seeing the military ship. After the RSN shared information on the incident with its Indonesian and Malaysian counterparts, three pirates were caught and a stolen cargo was recovered. Frederick Chew, commander of the MSTF, said: “I am heartened to see the good cooperation between Singaporean, Indonesian and Malaysian enforcement agencies in disrupting the sea robbery attempt on Permata 1.” http://www.seatrade-maritime.com/news/asia/singapore-warship-chases-away-pirates-in-singapore-strait.html
