Yacht lost keel and capsized off Baltrum, crew rescued in SAR operation

In the evening of Oct 13, 2017, the "Prodigy 2" capsized north of Baltrum island in the Northsea with a crew of three on board. At 6.45 p.m. the MRCC in Bremen received a semi-automatic distress call of the yacht. The crew initially did not respond. When communication was established, they were already inside a life raft after abandoning their sinking boat. The lifeboat "Bernhard Gruben" of the DGzRS-station Norderney and the "Secretarius" of the station Langeoog attended as well as an SAR helicopter of the Gerrman Navy and the emergency tug "Nordic" which was the closest unit to the accident site two miles north of the island. The "Nordic" was on scene at 7.10 p.m. and safely recovered the yacht crew. The capsized yacht was still floating on an air bubble in a water depth of about 10 meters. The castaways were hoisted by the helicopter at 9.25 p.m. and taken to Wilhelmshaven for medical checkups. The crew of the "Secretarius" tied a floating fender of the yacht to the wreck which emerged half a meter above the water level to mark it. During the night it drifted onto a water depth of five meters and was monitored by the multi purpose ship "Mellum". Winds at the time of the accident were three Beaufort with a swell of 05-1 meter. Obviously the yacht had lost its keel. On Oct 17 the yacht had run aground, lying on its port side, at the eastern tip of the island Langeoog in pos. 53° 45,732' N und 007° 34,580' E. On Oct 20 the wreck was recovered by a crane ship and deposited on the quay in the port of Hooksiel.
