Smoke development in engine room
On Sep 1 at around 11:00 a.m., the crew of the PSP 'Pluvier', while on patrol off Cap Gris Nez, detected significant smoke coming from its engine compartment. The CROSS Gris Nez immediately relayed a message requesting assistance from the resources present in the area. Several ships and air assets were deployed to assist. The 'PSP Cormoran', the BSAM 'Rhône', and the emergency tug 'Abeille Normandie' headed towards the position. Meanwhile, the French Navy's Dauphin helicopter, based in Le Touquet, was deployed to facilitate the transfer of response equipment from the 'Abeille Normandie' to the 'Pluvier'. The incident was quickly brought under control by the boat's crew. Late in the afternoon, two sailors suffering from mild smoke inhalation were medevaced by the SNSM lifeboat 'SNS 076'' and taken to Boulogne for treatment at the local hospital. The 'Pluvier' docked in Boulogne-sur-Mer on the evening for further investigations.
31 migrants rescued in three missions
On Aug 24, three rescue operations took place off the coast of Pas-de-Calais. On the early morning, a migrant boat was reported to the CROSS Gris Nez off the coast of Le Portel. The 'Minck' was deployed to locate the boat and discovered that it had suffered an engine failure. The crew offered assistance to the people on board, four of whom requested to be rescued. In the middle of the day, another boat was detected by the Wissant beach station. During the boarding phase, 18 people, who were in difficulty and had not managed to reach the boat, were rescued by the 'Abeille Normandie' and were disembarked at the port of Calais. On the late afternoon, the CROSS was informed by the SAMU 62 that another migrant boat was in difficulty in the Calais area. The PSP 'Pluvier' was deployed and offered assistance,. Nine people were rescued and taken on board on board. The patrol boat continued its surveillance and then disembarked the rescued people at the port of Calais. Thus a total of 31 people were rescued in the Strait of Dover.
Patrol boat rescued 40 migrants
On July 12 in the middle of the night, a migrant boat was reported to the CROSS Gris Nez which deployed the PSP “Pluvier” to check the situation in the area. Once there, the patrol boat crew noticed that the boat was stationary, with 40 people on board requesting assistance. The crew then picks up the 40 people on board and then dropped them off at the dock at the port of Boulogne sur mer. This operation took place in parallel with the shipwreck of 60 migrants in the same maritime sector.
