Ferrys hard landing still under investigation

Sat Jul 09 08:18:16 CEST 2011 arnekiel

It's still unknown what caused the Queen of Nanaimo to slam into the dock at Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal last week, but mechanical problems have been ruled out. "We haven't come to a conclusion yet. We're going to be interviewing staff members who were onboard," said BC Ferries communications director Deborah Marshall. That process will take about a week, she said. The vessel is back in service following two days of disruptions resulting from a hard landing at Tsawwassen on the evening of July 1. All trips to the Gulf Islands were cancelled July 2 as BC Ferries welders worked to repair structural damage above the water line of the bow hull. The vessel returned to service Sunday morning. The vessel returned to service Sunday morning, leaving approximately 20 minutes late for its first sailing.

Ferry knocked out after 'hard landing'

Sun Jul 03 08:41:33 CEST 2011 arnekiel

BC Ferry service to the Southern Gulf Islands should return to it's normal schedule Sunday morning, after the Queen of Nanaimo was knocked out of service Friday night. Spokesperson Deborah Marshall says welding work will continue on the damaged vessel overnight Saturday. "If all goes according to plan we do expect to resume full service tomorrow with the Queen of Nanaimo at 7:15am. Now what we are doing is opening our call centre early tomorrow morning at 5:30am. So if there are any customers on the Gulf Islands that want up to date information they can give us a call at 1-888-bcferry." An internal investigation is underway to determine what went wrong as the vessel had a "hard landing" as it attempted to dock in Tsawwassen Friday night. Mechanical problems have already been ruled out.

QUEEN OF NANAIMO 320068

Thu Dec 23 17:50:36 CET 2010 Timsen

BC Ferries engineers were still working to get the bugs out 5 days after the "Queen of Nanaimo" returned from a major refit on Dec 17, 2010. In the morning the vessel left Long Harbour terminal an hour behind schedule for the first run of its return to action. By the time of its next scheduled sailing, it was running almost two hours late due to problems with the fire suppression system and the heating system in the passengers’ area. Further difficulties were encountered on Dec 18 morning when other mechanical problems combined with heavy winds to force cancellation of the 6.30 a.m. sailing from Long Harbour. The gyro compass needed to be calibrated, and a separate issue arose with a bow thruster. On Dec 18 a control issue cropped up. Cancellation of the route’s stop at Sturdies Bay on Dec 20 was due to extreme weather. Passengers travelling on Dec. 22, Dec. 29 and 30 should be aware of potential delays. The vessel will be refuelled at Tsawwassen on those dates.
