Catamaran ferry broke down again

The 'Runö', connecting Ruhnu island in the Gulf of Riga with Munalaid, Roomassaare on Saaremaa and the mainland in Pärnu, went out of service due to a technical malfunction on the evening of Aug 12. The operator Tuuleliinid announced that on Aug 14 a replacement service would depart Ruhnu for Roomassaare at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and Roomassaare for Ruhnu at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. It was not yet clear what caused the latest malfunction. Backup vessels ran four times a day between Ruhnu and Munalaid, based on earlier bookings. The 'Runö' most recently suffered another technical malfunction the previous week, which was repaired within a day.

Return of ferry to take place as planned

The "Runö" which links the island of Ruhnu with the Estonian mainland, was to return to normal service on July 13 at 6 p.m. following an engine replacement from the port of Pärnu. The problem which affected the Runö's main engine was quite complex. The "Runö" had been berthed at Pärnu harbour since June 23 while the replacing of its engine was carried out. Also other options besides replacing the vessel's main engine were discussed but none of them were found to be suitable. The faulty engine itself was to be overhauled and retained as a backup for any future contingencies. The "Runö" had temporarily been replaced by another ferry, the "Amalie".

New main engine getting installed

The "Runö" was expected to resume operation to Ruhnu in the Gulf of Riga, on July 13 after its main engine has been replaced, making the evening journey on the Ringsu-Munalaid route that day. The ship's new main engine has arrived in Estonia, the installation of it will take a couple of days. The morning departure will be served by the ferry "Amalie" that is currently substituting for the "Runö" which has remained berthed at the Port of Pärnu since June 23 due to the failure of its main engine.
