Former Astor en route to breakers in Aliaga

Mon Jul 25 11:56:01 CEST 2022 Timsen

The 'Saga Pearl II', renamed 'Pearl' for its last voyage, has been taken in tow by the Greek-flagged tug “Christos XLIII” (IMO: 9080895) and left the port of Piraeus in afternoon of July 23m 2022, on its way to being scrapped in Aliaga with an ETA as of July 25. Since May 2019 she has been moored at Perama, a month after she was acquired by Aqua Explorer Holdings Ltd. and renamed “Pearl II”, bringing to an end an aborted project that would have seen it converted into one of the world’s largest private yachts. Previously owned by Saga Cruises, a British company, the “Saga Pearl II” was acquired at auction in mid-2009 to replace the “Saga Rose”, withdrawn in December of that year. In service for 41 years, she has previously sailed as "Astor" (1981-1985), "Arkona" (1985-2001) and "Astoria" (2001-2009). She should not be confused with the second "Astor", built in 1985 and with a very similar maritime stamp.
