Medevac off Mar del Plata

On Sep 27, 2023, a 43-year-old engine assistant of the 'Salvador R' began to feel severe abdominal pain on the right side of his body. The captain of the ship consulted with a Prefectural doctor, who indicated an immediate medevac by helicopter due to a suspected appendicitis for which he had to undergo surgery, from the ship, which was sailing off the southeast coast of Buenos Aires. A helicopter of the Argentine Naval Prefecture was deployed to the ship 500 kilometers off the coast along with a PNA plane and took off minutes later from Mar del Plata. Once the helicopter had reached the ship, the crew member was hoisted in a medical basket, and received the first medical attention on board the aircraft. He was transferred to the Rio Negro town of Viedma, where he underwent surgery in the night at the Artémides Zatti Hospital.
