FRS has to present salvage plan until September 1

Tue Aug 31 10:38:51 CEST 2021 Timsen

The FRS shipping company has been given time until Sep 1 to present the salvage plan for 'San Gwann'. Between Aug 30 and 31, the works were focused on extracting the 15 tons fuel from the tanks. The ferry stuck on stones and needs good weather conditions and sufficient means to be pulled out. The general director of FRS, Ronny Moriana, has assured that it was the first accident of this type suffered by one of its ships in its more than 150 years of history and confirmed that they will resume operations as soon as possible. The shipping company itself has also started an internal investigation. The captain has been with the company for 10 years. President Francina Armengol, who has come to Ibiza to analyze the accident and meet with representatives of the shipping company and the Balearic Port Authority, has applauded the coordination of all the institutions involved. The protocols were being followed and the injured and their families were being monitored, mainly the 10-year-old boy who is admitted to the pediatric ICU of Son Espases.

16 injured when FRS-ferry crashed onto islet

Mon Aug 30 13:33:22 CEST 2021 Timsen

The 'San Gwann', which is sailing between Ibiza and Formentera, stuck the rocks of the North islet of Es Malvins at the exit of the port of Vila in the evening of Aug 28, 2021. The ferry szffered water ingress, but was not in danger of sinking. On board were 35 passengers and 12 crew members. A ten-year-old boy has been seriously injured and had to be transferred by helicopter to Mallorca for treatment. Another 15 people have suffered minor injuries as a result of the accident. Salvamento Marítimo launched an SAR operation including the SAR vessels 'Salvamar Acrux', 'Salvamar Guardamar', 'Salvamar Polimnia' and a Helimer helicopter, as well as the Pilot's boat from the port of Ibiza, the Castaví Jet de 'Trasmapi', the GEAS and specialized companies, such as Servisub, The SAMU 061 ambulance team was taken to the damaged ship aboard a lifeboat, while the rest of the emergency professionals remained in the port of Ibiza awaiting the arrival of the evacuated passengers. The injured were evacuated by helicopter to the Can Misses Hospital, in Ibiza, aming them two seriously injured and another 7 less serious. The rest of the people were transferred to the port with SAR boats. Once in port, 10 mslightly injured people were transferred to the Can Misses Hospital and another six to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Clinic. The 10 year old child was treated in the Son Espases, the islands' referral hospital. The damage to the shuo was extensive, and according to experts who have been in the vicinity of the boat shortly after the crash, it was unlikely that it will be able to operate again between the Pitiusas this season, since the repairs cannot take place in Ibiza. The operator FRS appreciated the collaboration of Salvamento Marítimo, which has taken care of the rescue tasks of the ship and the evacuation of the passenger, as well as the rest of the institutions that have participated in the evacuation of the ship. As of Aug 29, the ship was still stuck in pos. 38° 53.33' N 001° 26.32' E with the 'Salvamar Acrux' on standby. There was no danger of any fuel spill from the ferry as the incident affected the bow, and the fuel tanks wre located in the stern. The FRS company as owner of the vessel was currently assessing the extent of damages and will submit a plan to refloat the ship to the Harbour Master's Office. The Balearic minister for transport, was at the scene on Aug 29, in order to discuss the plan. The president of the Balearic Government, Francina Armengol, will travel to Ibiza in the afternoon of Aug 30 to participate in a meeting with different institutions on the situation of the 'San Gwann'. The meeting will also be attended by the president of the Consell de Ibiza, Vicent Marí, the president of the Balearic Port Authority (APB), Francesc Antich, members of the Maritime Captaincy, Maritime Rescue and the FSR shipping company, and the Councilors for the Presidency and Mobility of the Government, Mercedes Garrido and Josep Marí.
