The "Isandlwana" is on her way back to Cape Town with injured seamen from the Taiwanese f/v "Lai Ching" which exploded Apr 19 off Tristan da Cinha. The "Isandlwana", which left Simon’s Town on May 3, 9 p.m., arrived off Tristan on May 7. Her helicopter and medical team were ashore by 8 a.m. The medical team went straight to the Camogli hospital and then carried out their assessments. The survivors had been picked up by the sister ship "Hsiang Man Ching" and taken to Tristan da Cunha for medial treatment. Of the 11 seamen taken ashore, 5 were admitted to the island’s hospital. They were airlifted onto the frigate by her helicopter and by 10.30 a.m. she departed. The remainder of the crew remained on board the "Hsiang Man Ching" which reached Cape Town on May 9. The vessel had on board 16 survivors and was also carrying the bodies of six fishermen who died in the explosion and subsequent sinking of their ship. The "Isandlwana" is expected to dock in Simon’s Town May 11 at 8 a.m.

After an explosion on board the Taiwan-flagged trawler "Lai Ching" on Apr 29, 2011, the MRCC of the SAMSA requested maritime assistance from the SANDF to conduct an SAR operation in Tristan Da Cunha island. There were 37 crew onboard, 4 were missing and 33 were picked up by the "Shian Man Ching". On May 3 the SA Navy deployed the "Isandlwana" to provide medical support to the medical facility on Tristan Da Cunha to stabilise and prepare the injured personnel for transportation to the RSA. The operation was to be executed over the period 02 – 12 May 2011. At May 5 noon the "Shiang Man Ching" was 840 nautical miles from Cape Town having landed 11 of the more seriously injured crewmen in Tristan da Cunha on May 2 who will receive emergency medical treatment at the medical facility in Tristan while they await the arrival of the navy frigate, while the f/v continued to Cape Town with the remainder of the crew at an average speed of 10 knots, ETA May 9.
