Norovirus outbreak on Riviera Maya Cruise

Tue Oct 17 11:28:45 CEST 2023 Timsen

A norovirus outbreak was reported on the 'Scarlet Lady' during its cruise which started on Oct 8, 2023 and ended on Oct 13, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The ship reported over 70 cases of norovirus. During the Riviera Maya cruise, which included stops at Cozumel, Mexico, and Bimini, the Bahamas, 66 out of 2,198 passengers and seven crew membersreported symptoms of the norovirus such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. News of the outbreak has been shared with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This move complied with established CDC health protocols to report gastrointestinal outbreaks affecting at least 2% of a cruise ship’s passengers and crew members of 3% of the passengers. The medical team isolated the patients and immediately enacted enhanced sanitization procedures, including additional cleaning of cabins and high-contact areas around the ship, working closely with the CDC and their medical professionals. The ship’s next batch of passengers were alerted while sanitary measures have been adopted to prevent another outbreak. The next sailing to Grand Turk and Bimini on Oct 13 proceeded as scheduled. The Vessel Sanitation Program under the CDC continued monitoring the situation, including the ship’s response to the outbreak and sanitation measures.

Cruise ship rescued 17 refugees

Fri Oct 14 11:38:43 CEST 2022 Timsen

The 'Scarlet Lady' has rescued 17 refugees from a small, craft near Cuba, the third time the ship has offered such assistance within one year on Oct 12, 2022, at approximately 6 p.m. Crew members had spotted the small vessel in apparent distress in rough waters. The cruise ship, which was en route between Cozumel, Mexico and Bimini, The Bahamas, turned to offer aid. While the refugees were insisting they did not want to be rescued, the small craft was overcrowded and not considered seaworthy. Eventually, the 17 refugees were brought onboard the cruise ship, where they were provided with food, water, and any medical care necessary. The small craft was abandoned after the rescue, with some meager bundles and containers left behind. The US Coast Guard (USCG) was contacted and dispatched a vessel torendezvous with the cruise ship, and the refugees were transferred to the authorities. The 'Scarlet Lady' was released to continue on her 5-night roundtrip Riviera Maya sailing from Miami, which departed on Oct 9. The ship called at Cozumel on Oct 11, and intercepted the refugee vessel at the end of a day at sea on Oct 12.
