Police removed protesters
The police arrested 16 people over the occupation of the 'Skandi Atlantic' in Timaru on Nov 16. One suffered minor injuries, following a 57 hour long occupation. The protesters have been charged with trespass and one of those arrested has also been charged with resisting police. Another 12 protesters were issued with trespass notices after leaving the vessel. Early on Nov 26, the police removed a further six other protesters and also warned Greenpeace members to move away from the corner of Dawson and Charman Sts as they had been trespassed. The remainder of the protesters had either left voluntarily or been removed by police using an angle grinder on Nov 25. The police used angle grinders to cut the last two protesters from the mast in the afternoon. A scaffolding was erected above the ship's bridge around the mast where they had tied themselves to the mast, and they were removed just before 3 p.m. 27 protesters had boarded the vessel on Nov 24 about 6 a.m. to prevent it from leaving for an oil drilling site off the coast of Taranaki. According to PrimePort Timaru's shipping schedule - the 'Skandi Atlantic' was due to leave at 9 p.m. on Nov 26, six hours after the last protesters were removed. Those arrested were due to appear in the Timaru District Court at a future date. Eight protesters removed
Eight protesters have been dragged from the 'Skandi Atlantic' by police on Nov 25. 3ß protesters have been occupying the OMV support vessel at the Port of Timaru for more than 30 hours, trying to stop the 'Skandi Atlantic' servicing the oil company’s drill rig off the coast of Taranaki. The police had been maintaining a presence to keep the peace but had to remove eight people from the vessel who had moved into an unsafe area.
Protesters occupied supply ship
30 Greenpeace protesters stormed aboard the 'Skandi Atlantic' at PrimePort Timaru in the morning of Nov 24, 2019. The Greenpeace climate and energy campaigner, Amanda Larsson said both police and the port's security personnel had been on board the 'Skandi Atlantic' and had instructed protesters to leave the vessel. Theey have been trespassed from the ship by the ship's captain, however they were staying on board. They planned to occupy the vessel for as along as possible. The protesters have come prepared with sleeping bags, food, warm clothes and even some tents set up on the back deck. Greenpeace was joined in the ship's occupation by campaign groups Extinction Rebellion, Oil Free Otago and 350 Aotearoa. By mid-morning a flag saying 'people vs oil' which was unfurled by climbing protesters at the top of the mast. The Austrian company OMV was about to begin drilling three oil wells at a 34,000 tonne oil rig off the coast of Taranaki, followed by one in the Great South Basin off the Otago coast The 'Skandi Atlantic' was allegedly bound for Austrian oil giant OMV's oil rig off the Taranaki coast at dawn on Nov 24.
