Trawler disabled by engine room fire

Sat May 18 17:56:11 CEST 2019 Timsen

On May 17, 2019, the "Sóleyja Sigurjón" suffered a fire in the engine room in the Denmark Strait, 90 miles north of Iceland, and issued a mayday call at 9.12 p.m. The patrol boat "Týr" headed towards the casualty to investigate the conditions aboard the vessel. The rescue vessel "Sigurvin", which was launched from Siglufjörður with two firefighters on board, was stood down after the fire seemed to be put out by activating the fire extinguishing system. The trawler "Múlabergið’" rendezvoused with the shrimp trawler as well as the helicopter "TF Líf" at 11.40 p.m. Five smoke divers of the "Týr" entered the engine room after its arrival on May 18 around 4 a.m. to assess the conditions and find remaining hot spots in the morning of May 18. Two of the eight crewmembers were hoisted aboard the "TF Lif" and taken to Akureyri aboard the helicopter. It was then decided that the "Múlaberg" would tow the disabled trawler towards Akureyri. The tug "Seifur" (IMO: 9832896) then took over to pull the heavily damaged ship to a mooring. The trawler was to be taken to Reykjavik for repairs. Tue Sep 29 09:48:43 CEST 2015 Timsen

The "Sóley Sigurjóns" on Sep 22, 2015, at noon reported smoke and rising temperatures in the engine room to the MRCC Iceland. The ship was 25 miles NW of Sauðanesi. The crew of eight sealed the engine room and switched on the fire fighting system. Two helicopters and a surveillance aircraft equipped with athermal camera to detect the temperature of the surface of the deck of the ship were sent to assist as well as the salvage ships "Siglufirði" and "Skagaströnd". In addition, it was decided to send the patrol boat "Thor" to the vessel. The Coast Guard also contacted surrounding ships. The "Thomas Þorvaldsson" was found to be less than an hour away from the "Sóley Sigurjóns". The Coast Guard aircraft was on scene at 12:48 p.m. and observed much heat around the exhaust pipe of the engine compartment. At 1 p.m. the crew of the trawler reported that they believed the fire was out and that they were attempting to get into the engine compartment to get the generator running. The Coast Guard assisted with smoke extraction in the engine compartment of the vessel. Smoke divers along with a commissioner of the Coast Guard came on board just before 2 p.m. About the same time the salvage ship "Slysavarnarfélagsins Landsbjargar" from Siglufirði arrived. While the crew of the "Sóley Sigurjóns" indeed got the generator running again, but a closer inspection revealed that it was not possible to get also the main engine running again due to fire damage. At 4 p.m. the "Thomas Þorvaldsson" (IMO: 425113610) started towing the trawler towards the port of Siglufjörður after having assisted to get the shrimp trawl up again. As the situation was under control, the "Thor" was stood down. The convoy reached port in the early morning of Sep 23. The ship left Siglufjörður again on Sep 25 again and berthed in the fishing port of Reykjavik on Sep 27. Icelandic report with photos: http://www.lhg.is/frettirogutgafa/frettir/nr/3068
