Container ship assisted distressed fishermen

Wed Feb 19 11:47:09 CET 2014 Timsen

Short after having sailed from the Blöount Island Marine Terminal in Jacksonville, Florida, on Feb 19, 2014, bound for San Juan, Puerto Rico, the crew of the "El Morro" received distress calls from a small fishing vessel in the Atlantic Ocean. The fishing vessel was attempting to hail the U.S. Coast Guard’s Jacksonville Sector with no success due to a weak transmission signal. The crew of the "El Morro" intercepted the communications from the fishing vessel and began relaying information to the U.S Coast Guard in Jacksonville. The U.S. Coast Guard requested the "El Morro" to remain in contact with the fishing vessel and divert to its last known position until having dispatched rescue vesselsthat could reach the fishing vessel. Once the rescue vessel had arrived, the "El Morro" was released by the U.S. Coast Guard and continued its transit to San Juan.
