Cargo ship rescued 54 migrants from sinking zodiac

Tue Jun 13 22:38:50 CEST 2023 Timsen

The 'Star Toscana' rescued the 54 occupants of a sinking inflatable boat, 49 men, four women and one minor, 96 kilometers from Fuerteventura, in Moroccan waters north of Tarfaya, on June 13, 2023, en route from Valencia to Santos. The castaways were later transferred onto the 'Salvamar Ízar', which transported them to the port of Gran Tarajal upon Fuerteventura at 10.50 p.m., including two men who fell into the water during the rescue operation of the freighter but survived, clinging to the remains of the rubber boat. The boat had issued a distress call with a satellite phone on June 12 which was received by the MRCC of Salvamento Marítimo in Cádiz. All ships in the vicinity were asked to be vigilant. After the 'Star Toscana' had located the rubber boat, it received instructions to stay nearby, waiting for a rescue ship to arrive, unless something unforeseen happened. When two of the occupants of the rubber boat jumped into the water, life jackets were thrown to them, and they were able to get back onto the zodiac, but then it started to sink. With two life rafts, the crew of the 'Star Toscana' managed to rescue everyone on board.

Investigation into grounding accident

Wed Dec 23 19:11:50 CET 2015 Timsen

Transportation Safety Board investigators tried to determine if the "Kai Xuan" actually ran aground at the deep-water bulk terminal in Squamish. The investigators have spoken to the master and other senior officers aboard the ship and have also taken the voice data recorder from the bulk carrier. Divers have found no damage on the hull of the vessel, that remained docked at the head of Howe Sound, 50 kilometres north of Vancouver. The "Kai Xuan" was free to leave port when scheduled, and officials have already said there is no danger to the environment. The area is prone to silting. A similar incident was reported just a few months ago.
