Trawler ran aground at Loch Broom

Fri Dec 08 09:15:42 CET 2023 Timsen

The 'Sustain', en route from Ullapool with three crew members on board, ran aground on a rock in pos. 57 55 03.5 N, 005 14 27.9 W, at the southern entrance to Loch Broom in Wester Ross on Nov 16 at 11.55 p.m. The 'Nordic Way (CY340)' stood by, awaiting a refloat on the incoming tide. On Nov 17 at 6.10 a.m. the RNLI boat from Lochinver was alerted and went on stand by at 7.15 a.m. in case the vessel refloated with damage. As the trawler did not refloat with the high tide at 09.13 a.m. the crew was taken off by the lifeboat and taken into Ullapool to rendezvous with the Ullapool Coastguard Rescue Team and the Police Scotland, which took drug tests. At 3 p.m. the 'Glen Scotia' and 'Trust' attended the vessel at low tide . At 5.15 p.m. the 'Sustain' began to take on water, and attempts were started to stem the flow of water into the vessel. At 6.45 p.m. all persons were evacuated the vessel. On Nobv 18 attempts to recover the fuel on board were started, before the weather changed. On Nov 21 at 7.40 p.m.the owner returned to the vessel and removed nets and various other loose objects. All the fuel had been drained meanwhile. On Nov 28 at 9.30 p.m. the owner, an insurer and and a salvor were on board. The starboard side hull had suffered further damage due to the action of recent weather, but there was no indication of pollution, flotsam, or debris. The insurers and salvors will be looking at what may be possible in terms of salvage or wreck removal. A recovery with airbags will prove difficult due to the shallow four-metre depth surrounding the vessel which was not refloatable due to hull damage.
