Techincal failure at Trabzon
The "Temel Reis" suffered a technical failure at Trabzon on April 24, 2018. The departure permission was cancelled by the Maritime Authority until the completion of permanent repairs which were being effected by the crew. On April 26 at 10.20 a.m. the ship left Trabzon again, bound to Sochi, ETA Apr 27, 2 p.m.
Happy end in sight for Nemo-crew
Ankara has given formal permission to issue visas to six Ukrainian citizens, crewmembers of the "Nemo". The issue of the return of the Ukrainians to their homeland was being settled on Jan 5 by the Consulate General of Ukraine in Istanbul. The Kocaeli port police received official permission from Ankara to issue visas for all six Ukrainian citizens. The Ukrainian Consulate General is currently settling the issue of accommodating the sailors for the night and their return to Ukraine. The case is controlled by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry. Seven Ukrainian sailors from the "Nemo" went on a hunger strike in a Turkish prison in the town of Derince on January 4, 2012. The dry cargo ship was arrested by local authorities on January 11, 2011 due to the debt of the ship's bankrupt owner. The ship was transferred to Swedbank Estonia due to the debtor's loans, but the crew then refused to leave the "Nemo" without getting salaries. On December 28, 2011, the sailors left the ship and were placed in a Turkish police department, waiting for the permission to leave the country. Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry reported that since December 28, the sailors were in the police department for work with foreigners in the city of Izmit, Kocaeli province.
Starving sailors in hunger strike
Seven Ukrainian sailors from the "Nemo" which has been under arrest in the Sea of Marmara for a year, and who are in a Turkish prison in the town of Derince and went on a hunger strike on Jan 4, 2012. They are asking for assistance from the state, because they are in a Turkish prison. The ship had been arrested by local authorities on Jan 11, 2011 due to the debt of the ship's bankrupt owner. The cargo ship was transferred to Swedbank Estonia due to the debtor's loans, but the crew then refused to leave the "Nemo" without getting salaries. Only in August 2011, Ukraine authorities learnt through some Ukrainian media outlets that the sailors of the ship needed assistance, however, attempts by the Ukrainian consulate to help the Ukrainian sailors return home failed. An appeal was sent to the Director of the Consular Service Department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Andriy Olefirov, noting the ship ran out of fuel and food long time ago. On Dec. 28, 2011, consuls, after repeated requests from the crew, took the sailors from the ship and placed them in a Turkish police department, waiting for the permission to leave the country. Despite the fact that permission from Ankara was received on Jan. 2, the chief of the GEbze port, in which the ship is now located, prevented the Ukrainian crew from leaving. On Jan. 4, 2012, the crew which already had lost 15-20 kg in weight in 2011, went on a hunger strike. The leadership of the Consular Service Department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry was asked to provide assistance to the Ukrainian sailors.
