Superyacht stuck as bridge did not open

Fri Sep 08 10:42:48 CEST 2023 Timsen

The 'Tranquility' was stuck in Rotterdam, as the bridge over the Noord in Alblasserdam suffered two disruptions on Sep 6, 2023. The 'Tranquility' had been at the Oceanco shipyard in Alblasserdam since the end of June for maintenance. The bridge experienced a technical fault around 2 p.m. that was resolved after 70 minutes. In the evening the bridge was to be opened for thesuperyacht, but then the hatch would not open. The barriers were already down, and so road traffic also came to a standstill. This problem was resolved, but on Sep 7 during the day the bridge was cooled again by a fire boat to prevent the expansion of the bridge valve due to the warm weather. Yacht renamed after being bought by Gentig and left Langkawi

Wed May 01 21:27:32 CEST 2019 Timsen

The "Equanimity", the superyacht at the centre of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal, was renamed "Tranquility" by its new owner Genting Malaysia Bhdand has set sail for Singapore. She left the Mawilla 3 navy jetty in Langkawi on April 28 at 2 p.m. and berthed at the Loyand Offshore Base on April 30. The marine police did not accompany the Tranquility along its journey as the vessel now belonged to Genting ans was no longer the government’s asset which was previously under the Attorney-General’s Chambers. On April 3, Genting confirmed it was buying the vessel together with bunkers, fuel, lubricants and other existing consumables on board for a total consideration of US$126 million. In a filing to Bursa Malaysia then, the company said on March 26, 2019, it made an offer to the Kuala Lumpur High Court of Malaya to purchase the superyacht under a Judicial Sale process, by way of private direct sale, pursuant to the Order made by the Kuala Lumpur High Court of Malaya under its Admiralty jurisdiction. The vessel was the most expensive item seized from fugitive financier Low Taek Jho or Jho Low over his links to the 1MDB fund misappropriation scandal. Despite being sold, Deputy Minister in Prime Minister's Department Hanipa Maidin had said that the vessel could still be used as evidence in the 1MDB court cases if the need arises. They could subpoena the new owner to produce the vessel during proceedings. On Oct 19, 2018, the High Court ruled that the government, 1MDB and two of its subsidiaries were the rightful owners of the luxury yacht because funds from 1MDB - a company fully controlled by the Finance Ministry - was used to purchase it. The superyacht was brought to Malaysia on Aug 7, 2018, after the Indonesian authorities handed it over to Malaysia. It was seized off Bali in February at the request of the US authorities as part of the corruption investigation launched by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) into 1MDB.

Seized yacht sold to casino operator

Thu Apr 04 11:01:02 CEST 2019 Timsen

The Malaysian government on Apr 3 had agreed to sell the "Equanimity" to the casino operator Genting Malaysia. The yacht was seized from the fugitive financier Jho Low off the coast of Bali as part of a global investigation into the 1MDB scandal. The yacht was sold for $126m. Malaysia had attempted to sell the yacht, which Jho Low allegedly bought with $250m of stolen funds, at auction but its association with the 1MBD scandal had led to few serious offers and bids failed to reach a $130m reserve price. The sale was the largest single recovery of the $4.5bn allegedly siphoned from the 1MBD fund. It was Genting, however, that offered the highest price which was approved by court. Genting, which was founded by the late Lim Goh Tong, who was once Malaysia’s richest man, said the casino chain would use the yacht to entertain its high-rolling gamblers. The yacht would give it a “unique and competitive edge for its premium customers business”. The yacht was among a long list of assets bought with money allegedly siphoned off from the 1MBD fund, including works of art by Monet and Van Gogh, homes in London, New York and California, a rare 22-carat pink diamond necklace valued at $27.3m and a see-through piano Low gave to the Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr.
