Ferry slammed into embankment of Kiel Canal
Thr ' Tundraland', enroute from Travemünde to Zeebrugge, ran into the south embankment of the Kiel Canal on the morning of Jan 7, 2026, just a few meters from the Breiholz ferry landing. After changing pilots in Schülp, the ferry approached the Breiholz siding around 3:00 a.m. The vessel then suddenly veered to the south side of the canal and slammed into the canal embankment. There was neither water ingress nor any other damage to the ship. Initial investigations by the Kiel Water Police indicate that a technical defect may have been the cause of the sudden change of course. However, the investigation into the cause was not yet complete on thr evening. After the incident, the "Tundraland" was able to free itself from the embankment using the power of its two MAN engines and return to the fairway. Following a check for possible leaks, the ship resumed its journey towards Brunsbüttel under its own power at approximately 3:30 a.m., in coordination with the traffic control center. The "Tundraland" then docked in Brunsbüttel for examination. The German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the Transport Sector (BG Verkehr) issued a prohibition on further navigation until the cause of the accident has been determined. Divers also examined the underwater hull for damage and traces of the impact. The ship departed Brunsbüttel again on Jan 8 and arrived in Zeebrugge on Jan 9.
