Coal smuggling ship reappears after three years with stolen identity

Thu Oct 06 12:00:24 CEST 2022 Timsen

The North Korean coal smuggling ship 'Un Bong 2' has reappeared after three years with stolen identity and appeared to follow precedent by again flying Tanzania’s colours when moving illicit coal for Pyongyang. The ship, which is known for running illicit coal, tried to disguise itself as a foreign-flagged vessel and evade detection before conducting a ship-to-ship transfer in Chinese waters. It had been missing from tracking systems for three years until August 2022, when it briefly reappeared within the North Korean port of Nampho before vanishing again. But one month later, a cargo ship calling itself the Tanzania-flagged 'Unkwang' arrived outside Nampho after a trip to China’s Lianyungang.

Fire off Weihai injured two crew members

Thu Sep 08 12:50:53 CEST 2016 Timsen

Two North Korean crew members of the "Lin Jong" have been medevaced after a fire broke out on the ship 31 km southeast of Weihai on Sep 8, 2016. The MRCC Weihai City was alerted at 7.30 a.m. and sent a rescue ship to pick up the two injured sailors, who arrived on shore in the early afternoon. They were both in a stable condition. The ship was currently holding position near China’s north-eastern coast.
