The rescue vessel "Visal 8" began recovery operations for the remaining sailors of the sunken "Van Don 02", but the operations faced difficulties due to rough sea. The ship, carrying 23 crew members, sank at about 2.58am, December 29 in the East Sea. 11 sailors are thought to have been trapped inside the ship that is now 40 m below the surface. On the evening of January 3, the rescue dive team went down to the site of the ship to capture video footage of the scene.

Eleven crewmembers from "Van Don 02" returned to their homes in Quang Ninh Province on December 30. Earlier the day, 12 men were brought to Ho Chi Minh City’s Cho Ray Hospital. However, one of them had to stay at the hospital due to his trauma in stomach. Most patients were slightly injured, but none seriously except one. On The "Van Don 02" was sailing from Malaysia to Ho Chi Minh City with a cargo of steel when rough seas stuck the ship and caused a list on Dec 28. All 23 crewmembers jumped overboard, but only 11 were saved from the rough seas by fishing boats. One more man from was saved later. 11 people from the ship are still missing. They are mainly from the provinces of Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Ha Noi and Ha Nam.

Eleven Vietnamese sailors were missing in the South China Sea after the "Van Don 2" sank during high winds in the morning of Dec 28, 2010. Twelve other mariners were rescued by fishermen after the "Van Don-2" sank about 250 miles off the coast of Ba Ria-Vung Tau. The search was hampered by bad weather. The ship was transporting material for making iron from Malaysia to Ho Chi Minh City.
