Grounding in Cologne

The 'Viking Einar', which was en route to Amsterdam and was scheduled to stop in Cologne for a sightseeing cruise, ran aground while attempting to dock on June 29, 2026, at around 9 a.m., in pos. in pos. 50° 56' N 006° 58' E in the Deutz area at Rhine kilometer 687.6. The bow was stuck underneath the Chocolate Museum, the stern was resting on a sandbank. The 37-year-old captain initially tried to free the ship, which was listing to port side, with own power, but to no avail. Passing traffic was not affected by the grounded ship. The police deployed the 'Gereon' (MMSI: 211664930) to the grounding site. A tug finally pulled the ship off again at around 7.10 p.m. UTC, and it was able to continue the voyage to Amsterdam with an ETA as of July 1. The Rhine was barred for shipping traffic during this time. The 190 passengers had been in no danger and did not have to be taken off the ship for the salvage operation. The police believed that the ship got stuck due to the low Rhine level with a water depth of only 1,24 metres at the grounding site. However, they suspected a navigational error: The captain should have discharged fresh water before docking because of the low water level. He apparently miscalculated, the police say. This could result in a fine.
