VITYAZ 8316780

Tue May 18 09:00:25 CEST 2010 Timsen

The spill of alomst one ton heavy fuel oil by the "Geopotes 14“ in the Kiel Canal between the passing point Dückerswisch and Brunsbüttel in the morning of May 17, 2010, at 4 a.m., was caused by a steering vent which was faulty mounted at the shipyard in Gdynia where the ship was coming from at the time of the incident. After repairs were carried out in the canal port of Brunsbuettel the ship was allowed to proceed to Rotterdam in the afternoon of May 17 and is actually approaching the Dutch coast. Fire brigades of Rendsburg and Brunsbuettel meanwhile concentrated on the oil recovery at Dückerswisch as the remainder of the oil trace up to Brunsbuettel proved to be unrecoverable.

VITYAZ 8316780

Mon May 17 13:11:20 CEST 2010 Timsen

the "Geopotes 14“ caused an oil spill of 13 kilometres length in the Kiel Canal between the passing point Dückerswisch and Brunsbüttel in the morning of May 17, 2010. The ship was ordered to berth in the canal port of Brunsbüttel. About 0,1 tons heavy fuel had spilt through a faulty pipe 100 from a tank on the main deck. The crew had remarked the spill but was unable to keep the oil from spilling. The fire rescue Brunsbüttel started to remove the oil. It was unclear, when the ship would be allowed to proceed to Maasvlakte at Rotterdam.
