Fish factory left Chimbote after three years

Sun Jul 08 12:45:34 CEST 2018 Timsen

After more than three years of staying in the Chimbote Bay (Ancash), the "Damanzaihao" has left Peru by July 6, 2018, and sailed to Ecuador, after the seizure made by the Specialized Public Prosecutor's Office on Environmental Matters of the Santa Region was made ineffective. The Fifth Preliminary Investigation Court of the Superior Court of Justice of the Santa Region did not confirm the confiscation of the ship. In addition, on June 28 the Second Appeals Chamber of this same court ordered that the seizure of the property be rendered null and void and that it be handed over to the company Sustainable Fishing Resources SAC, the former owner of the ship. At first, the head of the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office of the Santa Region, Mrs. Evelyn Lamadrid Vences, requested to be confirmed the seizure of the vessel for the alleged crime of illegal trafficking of protected aquatic species of flora and fauna. However, the court rejected the request for alleged inconsistencies and lack of motivation in the investigation.

Belize Revokes Factory Trawler's Registration

Mon Jun 11 12:08:58 CEST 2018 arnekiel

Belize has revoked the registration of the 50,000 ton Damanzaihao, the largest fish factory vessel in the world. The International Marine Registry of Belize (IMMARBE) stripped the Damanzaihao of its flag, at the request of Sea Shepherd Legal, for failing to appropriately complete its vessel registration materials and notify Belize of its record of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, according to a statement issued last week. The move renders the vessel stateless, according to marine conservation group Sea Shepherd, who has been working to get the vessel arrested and de-listed in the region. The Damanzaihao is capable of processing 547,000 tons of fish per year. In February 2015, The South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization or, SPRFMO, declared the vessel a “pirate” and added the Damanzaihao to its lists of vessels involved in IUU fishing, after detecting an unauthorized trans-shipment and false reporting to authorities about cargo of frozen Pacific mackarel. Pacific Mackerel stocks have collapsed in recent years, being caught increasingly for reduction into feed for the salmon farming industry. https://www.maritime-executive.com/article/belize-revokes-factory-trawler-s-registration#gs.J8FElIA

Owner maintains that factory ship never carried out fishing or processing activities in Peruvian waters

Fri Jun 08 11:30:02 CEST 2018 Timsen

The owner of the "Damanzaihao" ensured that the fine imposed was not yet firm. After the preliminary investigation initiated by the Office of the Prosecutor against the representative of the factory ship due to environmental contamination, the company Sustainable Fishing Resources - former owner of the vessel - indicated that the ship has never carried out activities of fishing or processing in the Peruvian territory. It was specified that it had remained in the port of Chimbote since October 2014 and that the penalty imposed on was approximately six million soles and it is not 23 million, as has been disseminated. However, it was ensured that said fine was still at the appeal stage. According to the company, until a month ago the ship was not prevented from sailing.
