XIN YI 8017580

Thu Oct 21 10:16:02 CEST 2010 Timsen

No evidence of serious oil pollution had been found following the sinking of the "Xin Yi" off the coast of Miaoli in western Taiwan, until Oct 20. According to the Department of Water Quality Protection, as little as 10 percent of the vessel's 300 tons of heavy fuel oil might be found in the sea as northeast monsoon winds might have helped 90 percent of the oil evaporate within 24 hours of sinking, and second, since the cement carrier's oil tanks were located in various parts of the ship, not all of them might have cracked open. Three crewmen are still missing and one died when the cargo ship sailing from China to Brunei sank due to huge waves in the Taiwan Strait.

One body was retrieved by one of the ships, and three people were still missing. The crew included 17 Burmese, four Indonesians and one Taiwanese. The victim was Burmese.
