Survey ship adrift after fire
In the afternoon of Oct 12, 2015, the "Yuzhmorgeologiya" suffered a fire in the engine room near the starboard engine funnel, followed by strong smoke development. The ship was in the central Pacific in position 09 07N 109 34W en route to Balboa. The engine room was sealed off and the, fire-extinguishing system activated. After the fire was contained, the engine room was ventiled, but could be accessed in respirators only. While the vessel was remaining adrift, the crew was checking if the engines were operable.
Odyssey finds WWII freighter carrying 240tons of silver bars
Luck may have finally turned for Odyssey Marine Exploration, TBO reports. The Tampa-based ocean exploring firm has located a WWII-era British freighter that went down with a fortune in silver bars. Odyssey found the vessel using a deep-water sonar system aboard the chartered Russian research vessel RV Yuzhmorgeologiya, and officials say they confirmed the identity by matching torpedo damage from the U-boat log entry, the quantity of tea chests in the ship's manifest, the ship layout and hull colors that match the British India Company color scheme.
