FUNNY GIRL

Misc. for ports and Vessels

On July 14, 2025, a woman collapsed aboard the 'Funny Girl', which was en route from Büsum to Heligoland. Several passengers on board witnessed the scene. A paramedic on vacation and four nurses who happened to be on board intervened. According to the medically trained rescuers, the situation appeared to be relatively serious. The rescuers decided to call a helicopter to fly the woman to a hospital. In this situation, some fellow passengers apparently behaved questionably. According to the paramedic involved, some vacationers began to gawk uncontrollably. Some even took cell phone photos of the patient and the rescuers. Passengers climbed over the emergency patient. The crew had to evacuate the rear deck and the passenger area on the sun deck because they needed space for the helicopter. However, some ignored the cordon and the rescuers' instructions, and some even stepped over the patient lying on the deck. Finally, the woman was stabilised, hoisted and flown to hospital.

Odessa

piracy

A Russian Iskander missile hit the Odesa port area on July 3, 2025, when dockworkers were unloading metal from a São Tomé and Príncipe-registered cargo ship, shortly after an air-raid warning was issued in Odesa at 12:47 p.m. Minutes later, the Ukrainian Air Force reported a Russian aerial asset approaching the city. Two people, one dock worker and a truck driver, were killed in the attack with the cluster ballistic missile, which is prohibited, Six people, including port employees and two Syrian crew members of the ship, were injuried. Vessel tracking were showing no ships in the Odesa region, but this is not unusual, as vessels are instructed to turn off their AIS when sailing to the Black Sea ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk and Yuzhnyy. Port infrastructure, such as gantry cranes, warehouses, and equipment as well as containers and trucks were damaged. Ukrainian officials have stated that the attack is not an isolated incident but a part of a campaign to separate Ukraine from the rest of the world by destroying its export infrastructure. These attacks are threatening global food security and have urgently called for an international response. On March 11, 2025, the Barbados-flagged bulk carrier 'MJ Pinar' was struck while loading wheat, resulting in the deaths of four crew members and injuring to others . On March 1, 2025, the Panama-flagged container m/v 'MSC Levante F' suffereed damage from a missile strike, injuring two port workers. The cumulative effect of the Russian attacks has been the destruction of nearly 400 units of port infrastructure and over 30 vessels. LA SUPERBA

Casualty

The process for the dismantling of the 'La Superba', which suffered a fire in the port of Palermo in early 2023, continues. The Port Authority of Palermo has published a request from the company, dated July 7, 2025, seeking authorization for the voluntary demolition of the vessel. Any comments regarding the request may be submitted by the first week of September. The GNV's intention was to declare a "constructive total loss," a step that will then allow ownership to be transferred to the insurance company (SIAT) that had provided hull and machinery coverage, which will then handle its end-of-life. Similar procedures have also been initiated at other local offices of the Port Authority for smaller vessels.

Novorossiysk

Casualty

A large-scale overnight drone strike by Ukraine struck Novorossiysk on May 3, 2025. damaging the country’s largest grain terminal and several apartment buildings. The attack triggered fires and forced authorities to declare a state of emergency in the port city, which is also home to the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Local authorities in Russia’s southern Krasnodar Krai confirmed that drones damaged three grain storage reservoirs at the KSK terminal, one of the region’s most important export facilities. The attack sparked a fire at the site. The terminal, which can store up to 220,000 tons of grain and handled over 10 million tons in 2024, is operated by the Moscow-based Delo Group.Delo Group, which assured that the terminal was continuing to function in line with internal procedures and guidance from authorities. FWN ADRIATIC

Casualty

On July 16, 2025, at 11.15 a.m. fire broke out in the cargo hold of the 'FWN Adriatic' in the 5th dock of the port of Antwerp near the Noordkasteel Bridge. The ship was carrying plasterboard and vehicles as cargo. The fire initially caused heavy smoke, advising local residents to keep their doors and windows closed. The fire department started extinguishing the fire from the quay, and a port fireboat was also present. After the fire fighters managed to close the ship's hatches, the smoke decreased significantly. The hold was to be flooded with CO2. The fire fighting was expected to take several hours. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges was urging shipping traffic to exercise extreme caution in the waterway from 5th Haven Dock km 1 to Amerika Dock km 1, as well as for berths 345 to berth 347. The cause of the fire was not yet known. The ship had arrived from Eemshaven.
