Forfeiture of tankers secured

Mon Mar 04 11:13:03 CET 2024 Timsen

The office of the Inspector General of Police has secured the forfeiture of the 'Harbor Spirit' and 'Kali', which were arrested for illegal oil bunkering. The 'Kali' was arrested with 20 crew and accomplices from the communities while siphoning illegal crude oil in Bayelsa State. The combined team of Tantita operatives and the Navy arrested the 'Harbor Spirit' on Feb 4, 2024 while the arrest of MT Kali was ongoing. The IGP’s office obtained the forfeiture order from the Federal High Court and also ordered the forfeiture of the contents of the tankers to the Federal Government. The judge also ordered the sale of the stolen crude oil by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited. The Justice further directed that the proceeds from the sale be deposited by NNPCL in an interest-yielding account to be determined by the Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court.

Tanker with stolen oil apprehended

Thu Feb 08 10:00:08 CET 2024 Timsen

The 'Harbor Spirit' with 88 tons of stolen crude oil on board was apprehended and arrested by a joint operation by the officials of the Tantita Security Services Limited (TSSL) and the offshore Bayelsa state on Feb 4, 2024. The vessel was arrested by the private security firm contracted by the federal government in the fight against crude oil theft in Nigeria, the Tantita Security Services Ltd. (TSSL). The vessel and the crew had been under surveillance for months before they were finally caught in the act while loading crude oil illegally at the Segana oil field off Bayelsa coast by operatives of Tantita in conjunction with the NSCDC personnel, as well as the operatives of the military. The tanker had been loaded with 88 tons of crude oil when the operatives swooped on them at about 1 a.m. The swift response minimised the quantity already stolen. 13 crew members of the vessel, all Nigerian nationals, were arrested on board the vessel while three jumped into the sea to escape being apprehended. The arrested have been cooperative so far since the arrest. The captain said they were misguided by their employer who gave them the impression they were on genuine business trip and that everything was properly documented.
