Tenders for wreck removal invited

Tenders have been invited for the wreck removal operation of the "Leonardo" which remained at the grounding site in the Northenrn entrance of the Istanbul Strait. The ship had suffered cracks at the hull, deck and other main deck sections on Aug 27, 2017, before it buckled and broke in two with the foreship sinking and the stern aground.

Fuel lightering postponed due to storm

The plan to drain the fuel from the stern section of the "Leonardo" aground at Kilyos on Aug 28 had to be postponed due to a storm. Authorities stated that after the storm has abated and the fuel has been pumped off, the rear part would be dismantled. Foreship of Leonardo has sunk

The foreship of the "Leonardo", which was split into two in Kilyos on Aug 27, has finally sunk about one kilometer off the coast after taking on water for several hours. The sinking site was to be surveyed for oil contamination on Aug 28. There were no fuel leaks at the ship up to now. The rear part of the wreck was landed on the coast of Kilyos with the help of tugs and remained on the rocks. The fuel from the stern was to be discharged on Aug 28.
