FUNNY GIRL

Misc. for ports and Vessels

On July 14, 2025, a woman collapsed aboard the 'Funny Girl', which was en route from Büsum to Heligoland. Several passengers on board witnessed the scene. A paramedic on vacation and four nurses who happened to be on board intervened. According to the medically trained rescuers, the situation appeared to be relatively serious. The rescuers decided to call a helicopter to fly the woman to a hospital. In this situation, some fellow passengers apparently behaved questionably. According to the paramedic involved, some vacationers began to gawk uncontrollably. Some even took cell phone photos of the patient and the rescuers. Passengers climbed over the emergency patient. The crew had to evacuate the rear deck and the passenger area on the sun deck because they needed space for the helicopter. However, some ignored the cordon and the rescuers' instructions, and some even stepped over the patient lying on the deck. Finally, the woman was stabilised, hoisted and flown to hospital.

HINNOY

Casualty

On July 15, the operations manager for the Vestfjord department in Torghatten informed that the cause of the problems of the manoevering system 'Hinnøy' has probably been found. The operator received assistance from an external company on July 14, which has delivered a new maneuvering system to the vessel, and tthe repair was underway, However, it has not been determined how to prevent this from happening again, and it was therefore difficult to say when the ferry would be up and running again. An extra ferry will not be deployed in the meantime, as there is a shortage of available ferries during the high season. If there was a lot of traffic, it was recommend driving via Narvik. The ferry remained sidelined in Lødingenuntil the morning of July 16, when it returned on the connection to Bognes, starting with a departure from Lødingen at 09:00 a.m.

ETERNITY C

piracy

The ten rescued crew members from the'Eternity C' have arrived safely at Jizan on July 14. Six Filipino crew members were pulled from the water and taken to Yemen by the Houthi terrorists. The Houthi communications center claimed that the survivors were provided with medical care and taken to a "safe location." The terrorists did not provide a timeline for their release and repatriation. At least four crew members were believed to have died from injuries sustained in the initial attack, and five others who were missing have now been presumed dead The lost seafarers included seven Filipinos, one Russian national and one Indian security guard. The Eternity C had beem attacked about 50 nautical miles southwest of Hodeidah by multiple skiffs. The vessel was then hit by multiple missile strikes, disabling its engine and causing it to flood. There were two penetrations in the hatch cover of the aftmost hold, one penetration in the accomodation block, and one internal blast in the engine room, evidenced by a hole in the hull with outward petaling of the shell plating. The environmental impact of the recent sinkings was still being assessed. The ship's owner, Guildford Navigation and the shipping company Cosmo Ship Management, which were behind the bulk carrier, have been left without coverage after the insurance company refused to take out war risk insurance for the ship, and were suffering a loss of between 15 and 20 million dollars.

LA SUPERBA

Casualty

The process for the dismantling of the 'La Superba', which suffered a fire in the port of Palermo in early 2023, continues. The Port Authority of Palermo has published a request from the company, dated July 7, 2025, seeking authorization for the voluntary demolition of the vessel. Any comments regarding the request may be submitted by the first week of September. The GNV's intention was to declare a "constructive total loss," a step that will then allow ownership to be transferred to the insurance company (SIAT) that had provided hull and machinery coverage, which will then handle its end-of-life. Similar procedures have also been initiated at other local offices of the Port Authority for smaller vessels.

MSC ANTONIA

Casualty

Ten days after running aground, the 'MSC Antonia' remains aground near the Eliza Shoals west of Jeddah. Satellite images from Pole Star Global were showing the vessel resting on a reef. Despite being listed as grounded, the ship appears on various vessel tracking sites, not just on the opposite side of the Red Sea but often far inland, along with other ships due to increased GPS spoofing . VesselFinder has the ship on Airport Road, south of Port Sudan, myShipTracking has it a few km further inland, while MarineTraffic’s location of the stricken ship places it – and a host of other vessels – 250 kilometres from the nearest shoreline in the Nubian Desert, the eastern region of the Sahara Desert. The maritime security specialist Ambrey has observed growing GPS interference in conflict zones with a constant disruption of the signal over an area, increasing navigational risk to shipping. The AIS signals showed the ship in Jeedah until June 18, and next available AIS signal of the 'MSC Antonia' was on June 26 in the Arabian Sea, and on July 3 it arrived in Singapore, before proceeding further to Phu My, where it arrived on July 8. BALTIC LIFT

Casualty

The decommissioned German trawler "Rudolf Virchow-SAS 252", which sank on May 25, 2025, in the fishing port of Dänholm in the Strelasund Strait, was raised by the 'Baltic Lift' on the evening of July 15,. The historic vessel will now be scrapped at the Volkswerft Shipyard in 'Stralsund. Divers had attached two straps to the bow and stern of the wreck, which was first righted and drained. The contaminated water from the hull was pumped onto special vehicles on site for proper disposal. The "Rudolf Virchow" passed the Ziegelgraben Bridge in Stralsund on the morning of July 16 in the slings of the floating crane, which moored at the Volkswert Stralsund at 7 a.m. UTC. Around ten salvors had been involved in the operation, including divers, assistants, and two captains. The cause of the sinking of the 24-meter-long vessel was still unknown. The water police initiated proceedings against an unknown person due to leaked operating fluids; as the owner of the vessel, which had been moored at the Dänholm quay for many years, was initially unknown. The "Rudolf Virchow" was built in Barth in 1952 and is considered one of the last fishing boats that belonged to the fishing fleet of the GDR. FWN ADRIATIC

Casualty

On July 16, 2025, at 11.15 a.m. fire broke out in the cargo hold of the 'FWN Adriatic' in the 5th dock of the port of Antwerp near the Noordkasteel Bridge. The hold was to be flooded with CO2. The fire fighting was expected to take several hours. The Port of Antwerp-Bruges was urging shipping traffic to exercise extreme caution in the waterway from 5th Haven Dock km 1 to Amerika Dock km 1, as well as for berths 345 to berth 347. The cause of the fire was not yet known. The ship had arrived from Eemshaven. MAERSK SANA

Casualty

On May 16, the Norwegian tug 'Sea1 Ruby' finally took the 'Maersk Sana' in tow following an extended period during which the laden vessel was ‘safely adrift at sea’ in the western Atlantic, en route to a port of refuge in the Bahamas, with an expected arrival in the last week of May. The container ship was towed to Freeport, a tow of approximately 900 nautical miles, which at five knots was completed on May 21. One crew member ‘who was transported to a hospital in the US remained in stable but critical condition and was receiving the best possible care. Maersk remained in communication with its customers about mitigating impacts to their supply chains” The weather conditions have remained favourable siunce the explosion and fire on April 29. The Atlantic hurricane season begins in a few days’ time, and then getting a towline on the 'Maersk Sana' could have been very different. Miami’s National Hurricane Weather Center reported that tropical cyclone formation is not expected within the next seven days. The 'Maersk Sana' finally left Freeport again on July 14, en route to Singapore with an ETA as of Aug 18.
