Door roller on ferry broke
In the night of Apr 19, one of the rollers for the bow doors on the "Martha’s Vineyard", now back a month from its $17.5 million refurbishment, broke. The vessel continued to operate but it required the loading and unloading be via the stern as the bow door remained closed. In the morning of Apr 20 a maintenance department was on site to replace the roller. However, when the vessel was arriving, it was noticed that one of the pilings in Slip 2 had shifted and there was a short delay as an assessment was made if the pile was in the way of the vessel docking. Once it was determined that the pile was not in the way, the ferry docked and the repair was carried out. The repairs, coupled with backing vehicles onto the ferry , caused a delay this morning in Woods Hole. The Martha’s Vineyard left on its scheduled 7 a.m. run at about 7:40 a.m. The maintenance personnel were able to replace the roller during that docking but it was planned to inspect the other rollers to make sure any issue is addressed- A marine contractor also removed the wayward pile to make sure there was no issue going forward, he wrote. The ferry will be taken out of service April 23. At that time it will go to the Fairhaven shipyard to go over a checklist of items that need attention.

Complications during repairs of propulsion system
Complications during the repairs to the propulsion system of the "Clansman" at the Garvel Clyde Shipyard in Greenock meant the vessel would be out of service for longer than anticipated. To minimise any disruption CalMac has agreed an extension to the "Hebrides"’ operating licence, which was due to enter dry dock, with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency for a further three weeks. Parts of the "Clansman"’s propulsion system have had to be sent to Denmark for specialist repair. CalMac will be operating to an amended timetable until the return of all major vessels, expected by May 31. Major changes are: Ardrossan-Brodick: MV Caledonian Isles delivering single vessel timetable from April 26 supplemented by MV Isle of Arran delivering shared timetable between Arran and Islay. Ardrossan-Campbeltown: start of summer service postponed. Islay services: MV Finlaggan delivering single vessel timetable from April 26 supplemented by MV Isle of Arran delivering shared timetable between Islay and Arran. Mallaig-Armadale: MV Loch Fyne until April 24 then MV Loch Fyne and MV Loch Bhrusda. Mallaig-Lochboisdale: this sailing will be cancelled with the MV Hebridean Isles providing a service from Lochboisdale to Oban. CalMac’s customer care team is working to ensure anyone already booked to travel is aware of the new timetable arrangements. Passengers are urged to check the website to confirm amended timetables before travelling at calmac.co.uk.

Crew paid and repatriated
The 16 crew members of the "Avonmoor" have received their wages and returned home to Ukraine after being abandoned for four months in Morocco, according to the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF). The seafarers were abandoned in the Port of Casablanca by the vessel's owners in January 2018. The mariners were bereaved of their wages, basic provisions, fuel and first aid supplies. In addition, the 1998-built vessel was in blackout, while anchored in the mouth of the port, which caused significant security concerns for the crew. The wWages were received and crew repatriated previous to 19 Apr.

The vessel was freed and arrived at the Upper Harbor Ore Dock in Marquette in the morning of Apr 20.  Thorco Cloud  (Cargo)
11 hours ago by Timsen

440 tons fuel recovered from Thorco Cloud wreck
More than 440 tons of heavy fuel oil was extracted from the tanks of the "Thorco Cloud". The wreck lies in two sections 1,730 meters apart and 70 meters down in the middle of the eastbound traffic lane of the Singapore Strait following a collision in December 2015. The heavy oil in the fuel tanks and in trapped compartments was seen as a major pollution hazard. Both the bow and stern sections contained fuel tanks that required emptying, so the owner, Marship GmbH, supported by the P&I insurance company Standard Club, contracted Jaya Salvage Indonesia early in 2017. Bumi Subsea provided remotely operated vehicles (ROV) and the dynamically positioned Surf Allamanda, owned by Bourbon Offshore. This served as the work platform during the salvage of the trapped fuel by using the Moskito hot tap tool developed in Norway by Miko Marine. Report with photos: https://www.marinelink.co...

Boat with four tanker crew capsized off Little Haven
Four men were marooned on rocks off the coast at Little Haven in the afternoon of Apr 19. 2018, after one of them needed to leave the "Else Marie Theresa" to return home to the Philippines. They left the ship after midday as one of them received news of a death in the family in his home country, the Philippines. He had decided to return home by catching a plane from Cardiff Airport in the afternoon. As their boat approached shore, it capsized, but luckily the men were able to make their way onto some nearby rocks. The inshore RNLI lifeboat from Little and Broad Haven was launched at 1 p.m. and saved the stranded men. The RNLI later returned to retrieve the capsized boat from the water. The ship was underway from Rotterdam to Pembroke Port. Report with photos: www.westerntelegr...

Fire damaged hake freezer scuttled as artificial reef
The "Urabain" joined the submarine parks of the Golfo Nuevo in the morning of Apr 19, 2018. The hake freezer had suffered a fire and was sunk to join other ships that are already part of the artificial parks destined for diving. The owner Iberconsa had rendered the wreck useless after the fire so it was decided to scuttle it after emptying liquids as fuel and bilge water in the recent months as well as removing all equipment in order to leave the hull clean and avoid water pollution. The ship had been moored at berth 4 of the pier "Almirante Storni" of Puerto Madryn when it suffered a fire start of September 2017 and was declared a total loss. Thge "Boris Vilkitsky" grossly violated the North Sea Route Navigational Safety Rules by entering the Kara Sea, while en route to Sabetta LNG Plant, with serious deficiencies, which reduced the ship’s ice class and restricted sailing in ice conditions. On Apr 16 she completed cargo operations, loading an LNG shipment bound for France. On Apr 20 the tanker was still anchored off Sabetta, probably having been detained.

Tug doused flames on blazing fishing vessel
On Apr 18, 2018, the "Michelle Sloan" assisted the 47.ft-f/v "Midori" which had caught fire at 9 a.m. 10 miles west of Trinidad, Florida. A crewmember from the distressed fishing vessel contacted another fishing vessel, the "Charlie D", via cell phone to report the fire. The crew of the "Charlie D" in turn contacted the Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay via VHF channel 16, reporting the "Midori" was on fire with five crewmembers preparing to abandon ship. The watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and dispatched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and a 47-foot lifeboat crew to assist. The "Midori" crew donned their survival suits and abandoned ship into a life raft. The fishing vessel "Pacific Bully" rescued all five crew members before the helicopter and boat arrived at the location to find the vessel’s pilothouse engulfed in flames. Shortly after, the nearby "Michelle Sloan" diverted from its course and extinguished the fire aboard the Midori. The Coast Guard was coordinating fuel removal and salvage operations on Apr 19. Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Humboldt Bay pollution responders have determined the "Midori" was safe to be towed to the Eureka Municipal docks, where the 1,500 gallons of diesel were to be removed. Before the vessel was towed to port, a helicopter crew from Sector Humboldt Bay conducted an additional overflight in the evening of Apr 18 to assess any potential pollution and saw no signs of a spill in the area where the vessel caught fire.
