CMA CGM Buys Stake in CSP Zeebrugge Terminal
French container carrier CMA CGM announced Friday it has acquired from CHINA SHIPPING Ports Development Co. Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of COSCO Group, a 10 percent equity interest in CSP Zeebrugge Terminal NV, through its wholly-owned subsidiary CMA Terminals. CMA CGM is currently the major client of the Belgian container terminal and accounted for one third of CSP Zeebrugge's total throughput in 2017. COSCO SHIPPING Ports completed the acquisition of the remaining 76 percent equity interest in CSP Zeebrugge terminal in November 2017 and made it a wholly-owned subsidiary.

Mermaid Maritime wins $16m Middle East contract
Mermaid Maritime has won a $16m subsea services contract in the growing Middle East market. The offshore services company said in a stock market announcement that work for the job in one of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, is scheduled to be performed in the Arabian Gulf from August 2018 until March 2019. Mermaid plans to use its DP2 Dive Support Vessel Mermaid Endurer equipped with the Air and SAT Dive systems to carry out the overhauling and dry docking of the calm buoys and installation and disconnection of certain Single Point Moorings (SPMs) for an international oil and gas company, with further options for the removal and reinstallation of the additional SPMs. Source: seatrade-maritime.com

Canada’s Davie Shipbuilding delivered first LNG-powered ferry to be built in North America
On 17 July 2018, Davie Shipbuilding, Canada’s largest shipyard, announced that it has delivered the first LNG-powered ferry to be built in North America. This pioneering ferry can be powered entirely by LNG, the cleanest fossil fuel known to mankind. Delivering this prototype has taken years of work by Davie, the designers and the classification society, who have had to develop construction and operations rules and regulations during the construction in order to cater for this new type of propulsion system. NOVATEK shipped first LNG cargos to China
PAO NOVATEK says it has shipped its first cargos of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Yamal LNG project to China via the Northern Sea Route. Today, in the presence of Alexander Novak, the Minister of Energy of Russia and Nur Bekri, the Director of the National Energy Administration of China, an official ceremony was held to commemorate the arrival of Arc7 LNG tankers “Vladimir Rusanov” and “Eduard Toll” to the Chinese port of Jiangsu Rudong. The net voyage time from the port of Sabetta through the Northern Sea Route to the destination port was completed in 19 days as compared to 35 days for the traditional eastern route via the Suez Canal and the Strait of Malacca.

The decree was signed by Acting Harbour Master Boris Gorbushin. According to the decree, vessels should mind sporadic ice floes in the water area of the port and at the approaches to it.

The PORT OF KIEL invests in cargo handling, environmental technology and the traffic shift from road to rail. Dr. Thilo Rohlfs, state secretary of the ministry for economy, transport, labour, technology and tourism for the country of Schleswig-Holstein, made use of a visit to the port of Kiel to inform himself about the current port investment projects that take place in the capital city of Kiel, the port's press release said. “The port of Kiel has grown significantly over the past years. With the support of the county of Schleswig-Holstein, the port has managed to realise some very important projects such as the expansion of the Ostuferhafen”, says state secretary Rohlfs. Today, the port of Kiel handles over 7 million tons of cargo per year and over 2 million passengers pass through the port annually. Thilo Rohlfs: “My impression that the Port of Kiel is very well-positioned and that it is capable of successfully holding its ground has been confirmed. The country of Schleswig-Holstein will continue to actively support this successful trajectory of the port of Kiel in future.” As part of a tour of the harbour, PORT OF KIEL’s managing director Dr. Dirk Claus informed the state secretary of the port’s current investment plans. Alongside the project to expand the pre-storage area for trucks at Kiel’s Ostuferhafen these plans include the creation of a third switching track at Kiel’s Schwedenkai terminal as well as the creation of an onshore power supply facility at Kiel’s Norwegenkai terminal.

Icebreaking LNG carrier "Vladimir Rusanov" first call ceremony at PetroChina LNG Jiangsu Terminal
The Ice-breaking LNG carrier "Vladimir Rusanov", which is jointly owned by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited for the Yamal LNG project, made its first call at PetroChina LNG Jiangsu Terminal in China on 17 July. A ceremony celebrating this milestone was held on 19 July, MOL said in a media release. At the end of March 2018, the vessel started transportation services for LNG produced by the Yamal LNG plant at Sabetta port in Russia (*2). For its latest voyage, the vessel departed from Sabetta port on 25 June, and had its first opportunity to navigate independently eastwards along the Northern Sea Route without ice-breaker support. The vessel passed the Bering Strait on 6 July(*3), and safely made its first call at PetroChina LNG Jiangsu Terminal in China on 17 July. The net voyage time from Sabetta to Jiangsu excluding stoppages for adjusting arrival time was 19 days only - much shorter than time usually taken for a route through Suez Canal, that is, more than a month. This voyage also marked the first direct LNG delivery to China for the Yamal LNG Project.

MOL hosts tour of cutting-edge car carrier on Marine Day for 360 students and families
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) on Marine Day, Monday, July 16, hosted a tour of the cutting-edge car carrier Beluga Ace at Harumi Pier, in cooperation with the Japanese Shipowners' Association (JSA), the shipping company said in a press release. The company welcomed about 360 elementary and junior high school students and their family members, who were selected in an online application process. The participants boarded the huge vessel – measuring about 200m long and 50m-high –and made their first stop in the engine room, where they listened to a presentation about the equipment, and a select few got to experience the start-up of the power generator. Then, participants observed a demonstration of high-precision loading of vehicles, and moved around the ship in some of the vehicles. After a greeting from the captain on the bridge, they got to see and touch nautical instruments and binoculars. Then, with specially made maps distributed at the reception desk on hand, they freely toured some onboard facilities such as the captain's quarters, a hydroponic vegetable garden, pool, and lounge. On the pier, meanwhile, students and their parents alike enjoyed a craft workshop session where they made replicas of the ship out of paper. In addition to about 130 MOL Group executives and employees, the vessel's crewmembers took part in the event to talk about what it's like to work at sea.

Crowley takes delivery of first LNG-powered ConRo ship serving Puerto Rico
Crowley Maritime Corp. has taken delivery of El Coquí, one of the world’s first combination container/roll on-roll off (ConRo) ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), from shipbuilder VT Halter Marine Inc., the Company said in a media release. El Coquí is the first of two Commitment Class, LNG-powered ConRo ships being built for Crowley’s shipping and logistics services between Jacksonville, Fla., and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Operated by Crowley’s global ship management group, El Coquí will make its maiden voyage to San Juan later this month from Jacksonville (JAXPORT), its dedicated U.S. mainland port. Construction of sister ship Taino is well underway at VT Halter Marine’s shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss., and she is scheduled to enter service later this year.

Porpulsion damage off Piraeus
In the morning of July 19, 2018, the Central Port Authority of Piraeus was informed by the captain of the "Super Jet" hat during the scheduled service from the port of Serifos to the port of Piraeus, the ship had suffered a mechanical damage to the outer hydro-propeller on port side due to the collision with drift goods. At a reduced speed, the ferry sailed to the port of Piraeus, where the 88 passengers were dropped off. The ferry was detained until the damage was repaired and a class survey carried out. The Serifos-Sifnos-Milos-Kimolos-Folegandros- Thira-Ios-route was served by other ships.

The "Kapitan Yakovlev" ran aground on Kronshtadt anchorage off St. Petersburg on July 19, 2018, at 10.12 a.m. while approaching the Moby Dick Cargo Terminal in Kronshtadt, with 4.200 tons of steel on board. Crew members on hunger strike
In the port of Azov, several Russian sailors aboard the "Riroil 5", which berthed on May 19, 2018, declared a hunger strike demanding repayment of their salary debts. The amount of debt was 100.000 dollars. Sailors of three more ships, the Turkish company Palmali did not pay salaries, some have debts of eight months. The owner gets in touch every day and promises to pay off the debt, but has not done so yet. Mariners were preparing legal claims on Palmali.

The "Horizon" sustained damage to its anchor due to rough weather while anchored at Port Muhammad Bin Qasim, on July 16, 2018, at 3 p.m. The repair works were in progress and the vessel will be able to berth once the repair works have been completed. The "Deun" sufffered a main engine failure in the Bay of Biscay on July 14, 2018, at 6 a.m. The vessel was subsequently towed to Shannon Estuary by the tug "Trheinta" and arrived in Limerick on July 19 at 7 a.m. Repairs were underway, and the ship was still in port on July 20.

Fire in paper pulp cargo
On July 19, 2018, a fire broke out in the cargo hold of the "CSC Zhi Hai", which had was berthed at Changshu port, Shanghai. The paper pulp cargo inflated. The CO2 system was activated. Because of the dangerous character of the cargo the crew and terminal staff were evacuated and a safety zone established. An emergency team was waiting until the hull had cooled down.

Juice tanker had near miss
The "Orange Sun", loaded with 30.000 tons juice, had a near miss with the pier of Praticagem in Ponta da Praia and small boats, which were scattered around, while leaving Santos in the afternoon of July 19, 2018, in dense fog, bound to Big Bend. The ship had unmoored from Citrosuco at Margem Esquerda at 5.04 p.m., but suddenly turned hard to starboard while maneuvering and had to drop anchor to avoid an allision. Tugs pulled the ship to a safe position. The ship was detained for inspections of possible damages. On July 20 it was still moored at Santos outer Anchorage in pos. 24° 8.86' S 046° 17.72' W. Damaged tanker still on Suez Anchorage
dThe "Kimolos" remained on Suez South Anchorage being oored in pos. 29° 43.43' N 032° 35.12' E on July 20. The ship had a list of about seven degrees and a trim to forward of 2-4 meters. Probably the ballast tanks at the port side foreship have been damaged in the grounding on July 15. Accoding to the owner Okeanis Eco Tankers the tanker’s bottom was damaged, but not breached.
