One person died when barge sank in Amsterdam
On July 18, 2026, at around 8.30 a.m. a barge sank in the Western Port Area of Amsterdam, right next to the two Coen Tunnels. One person went missing, and a search for the victim was launched involving multiple emergency services and the National Underwater Search Team , a sonar boat, and a drone. When the fire department arrived along with a number of ambulances, the barge was still partially above water. Since then, it has sunk completely. On the night of July 19, the body of the missing man was found on board the barge. The Labour Inspectorate and the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. The police's Traffic Accident Analysis (VOA) unit was conducting further investigations. Port of Amsterdam Doubles Discount for Green Ships
Port of Amsterdam said the maximum Environmental Ship Index (ESI) discount is doubled for ships with ESI certificates and liquefied natural gas (LNG). For some years Port of Amsterdam has been giving discounts on port dues to vessels listed in the ESI that have attained an ESI score of 20 points or higher. "As of 1 August, we will be increasing this incentive by adding another discount: Port of Amsterdam will be doubling the maximum ESI discount for vessels that are in the possession of an ESI certificate and use LNG for their main engine or auxiliary engine," said a press release.
Amsterdam: Carbon emissions in North Sea Canal Area to be reduced by half by 2030
Industrial companies based in the North Sea Canal Area seek to cut carbon emissions by 50% by 2030, bringing them down from the current level of 15 megatons. Virtually all circular waste flows must be recycled by 2050 and carbon emissions minimised. In committing to these targets, the area aims to be among the leading regions in Europe when it comes to reducing climate change.
