Tanker and frigate escorted by British Navy
The HMS 'Portland' of the British Navy escorted the Russian frigate 'Admiral Kasatonov' and the supporting tanker 'Akademik Pashin' on their way through the English Channel. The ships have been operating in the eastern Mediterranean since early last year. On March 9, the ships passed the Strait of Gibraltar, without it being clear why. Since then they have been accompanied by various NATO countries, and now by the British. The Netherlands also sometimes takes action against Russian ships in Dutch waters. A Russian ship in the North Sea tried to collect data about wind farms a few months ago, according to the MIVD. That ship was then led away. Russian navy ships intercepted by Spanish patrol boat
The Spanish navy patrol boat "Centinela" intercepted two Russian navy ships on March 7, 2023, the frigate 'Admiral Kasatonov' and the 'Akademik Pashin'. After identification, the patrol boat proceeded to track and monitor them in the waters of the western Mediterranean Sea. At the end of February, the head of the Italian navy had warned: "The Russian navy has greatly increased its presence in the Mediterranean". Admiral Enrico Credendino even denounced an "aggressive attitude", leading to "a risk of an incident". “The immediate effects on our security linked to the war in Ukraine have been identified at sea and are visible with the impressive increase in the presence of the Russian fleet in the Mediterranean and in the Black Sea”. Russian fleet oiler unexpectedly closes in to Cork
The 'Akademik Pashin' that popped up off the coast of Cork has moved closer towards Ireland on Aug 17, 2022. The ship was spotted around 140 km due south of the West Cork coast. As of 4.30 p.m. the ship was closer to 100 kilometers off the coast of Cork. Russia announced in the evening that their Northern Fleet was undertaking training exercises in the Arctic saying: "The Northern Fleet began a planned exercise with a grouping of diverse strike forces to resolve crisis situations in the Arctic. It involves more than 10 surface ships and submarines, as well as aviation and air defense units." The tanker usually is operating closely with ships including the missile cruiser 'Marshal Ustinov', which were scheduled to perform exercises 160 miles off the Cork coast. It is understood the Russian ship is not on its expected course, following an anticipated track west out into the wider Atlantic.
