Oil pollution in the Kiel Canal

Fri Sep 07 12:32:42 CEST 2018 Timsen

In the foremidday of Sep 7, 2018, the "Anmare", enroute from Klaipeda to Ipswich, lost oil at the start of the westbound transit of the Kiel Canal. The ship was berthed at the quay of the Bominflot Bunkerstation in Kiel-Wik since 8.20 a.m. to take on marine diesel. At 11 a.m. an oil spill was observed around the vessel. The fire brigade in Kiel was alerted and planned to lay out oil booms around the whole ship. The plan to surround the ship with oil booms was dropped as the contamination was less than initially feared. The forces of the fire brigade thus focussed on removing the oil from the surface as soon as possible, which was finished at noon. Initial observations indicated that there was hydraulic fluid leakage at the stern tube. The ship was detained at the quay until assessments of experts have been completed which could still take some time. The captain had to pay a safety fine, and the prosecutor launched an investigation. The ship continued the voyage on Sep 8 at 4 p.m., ETA Ipswich Sep 10. Grounding south of Drejens

Thu Feb 01 18:59:36 CET 2018 Timsen

On Feb 1, 2018, at 10 a.m. the "Anmare", enroute from Santander towards Kolding Harbor, ran aground in the Kolding Fjord with a cargo of sodium sulfate and a crew of seven on board. There was no leak and no oil spill, but the ship was hard aground about 400 meters from the shore between Drejens and Agtrup, west of Skærbæk. One of the Danish navy's four environmental ships, the "Gunnar Seidenfaden" which was already practicing in the Lillebælt was sent towards the grounding site in the afternoon. On Feb 2 the tug "Obelix" (IMO: 9691448) pulled the "Anmare" off, and both ships berthed at the South Quay in Kolding at 1 p.m. She left the port of Kolding on Feb 4 at 9.10 a.m., next bound to Varberg, where she arrived at 10.50 p.m. before proceeding to Flushing, ETA Feb 8.
